Daniel Smith Watercolour Ground 473ml - Titanium White
Our everyday low price
The big jar for serious projects. Daniel Smith Watercolour Ground in Titanium White, 473ml, gives you enough bright white primer to prepare a whole stack of wood panels, boards or canvases for watercolour. It dries with a texture like cold press paper, so your washes and lifts behave the way you expect.
What Is Watercolour Ground
Watercolour ground is a primer that turns almost any surface into one that takes watercolour like paper. Brush it on, let it cure, and you can paint, lift and glaze on wood panels, canvas, glass, metal or card.
Once dry it has a texture similar to cold press watercolour paper, so your washes, granulation and lifting behave the way you expect.
How to Use It
- Prepare. Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Wipe glass with rubbing alcohol, and lightly sand slick surfaces like wood, glass and plastic so the ground can grip.
- Stir. Stir the jar well, as the ground settles.
- Apply thin layers. Use a sponge brush, foam roller or palette knife. A soft brush gives a smoother finish, a palette knife adds texture. Build up to 4 thin layers.
- Let it cure. Leave at least 12 hours between layers and at least 24 hours before painting. Let it dry naturally, without a hair dryer or heat gun.
- Paint. Paint with watercolour just as you would on paper.

About 3.8 square metres, according to Daniel Smith. That is roughly eight full 56 x 76cm sheets.
What surfaces can I use watercolour ground on?
Canvas (stretched or on a rigid board), wood, glass, cardboard, metal, ceramic, plastic and stone. Do not use it on fabric that bends, as it is not washable and will crack.
