Made to last.

Watercolour ground is a primer that turns almost any surface into one that takes watercolour like paper. Brush it on, let it cure, and you can paint, lift and glaze on wood panels, canvas, glass, metal or card.

Once dry it has a texture similar to cold press watercolour paper, so your washes, granulation and lifting behave the way you expect.

How to Use It

  1. Prepare. Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Wipe glass with rubbing alcohol, and lightly sand slick surfaces like wood, glass and plastic so the ground can grip.
  2. Stir. Stir the jar well, as the ground settles.
  3. Apply thin layers. Use a sponge brush, foam roller or palette knife. A soft brush gives a smoother finish, a palette knife adds texture. Build up to 4 thin layers.
  4. Let it cure. Leave at least 12 hours between layers and at least 24 hours before painting. Let it dry naturally, without a hair dryer or heat gun.
  5. Paint. Paint with watercolour just as you would on paper.

Questions About the Daniel Smith Titanium White Watercolour Ground 118ml

What is the difference between Titanium White and Transparent ground?

Titanium White gives you a bright white painting surface, like a sheet of watercolour paper. Transparent dries clear so the wood grain, print or colour underneath shows through.

What surfaces can I use watercolour ground on?

Canvas (stretched or on a rigid board), wood, glass, cardboard, metal, ceramic, plastic and stone. Do not use it on fabric that bends, as it is not washable and will crack.

How many coats do I need?

Daniel Smith recommends up to 4 thin layers for a final thickness of about 2mm. Let each layer cure for at least 12 hours, then wait at least 24 hours before you paint.

Can I tint watercolour ground?

Yes. Mix in up to 10% watercolour or up to 20% acrylic paint to tint it. You can also thin it with up to 10% water, but thinning more makes it less effective.
