Are you looking for a super cool School Holiday Activity or a Lockdown arts and crafts activity for kids?

Origami first originated in China over a thousand years ago and was further developed in Japan into a fine art form. Art Shed's chief Kids Art Tester Freyja loves creating Origami and wanted to show other kids how to create a super cool Cat and Heart from Mont Marte Construction Paper!

Keep reading to discover how to create an origami heart and origami cat with Freja.

Heart Origami

You will need:

  1. Place your a4 sheet of paper in landscape form
  2. Take the top right corner and fold it to meet the bottom of the paper
  3. Trim the extra paper to form a rectangle (the rectangle when opened should have a fold line running through the middle connecting 2 corners)

4. Open the rectangle to form a square

5. Fold the rectangle again from one corner to the opposite corner. The fold lines should now look like a cross when opened

6. Now, take one corner and fold it to meet the centre of the page where the two-fold lines meet

7. Now, take opposite corner and fold it to meet the top edge.

8. Now, taking the bottom corner, fold half of the paper to reach the top.

9. Then, take the other bottom corner and fold it to meet in the middle.

10. To make the heart shape more rounded, fold the pointed edges down slightly, and trim the folds.

11. Using a marker, textas, crayons or pencils, draw some designs on the outside and inside of the heart. You could also add stickers or glitter to your hearts, or even write a nice message to your friends or family and pop it in their mailbox for a heartfelt surprise!

Super Cool Cats & Dogs Origami

You will need:

  1. Place your a4 sheet of paper in landscape form
  2. Take the top right corner and fold it to meet the bottom of the paper
  3. Trim the extra paper to form a triangle (the triangle when opened to form a square should have a fold line running through the middle connecting 2 corners)
  4. Keeping your paper in a triangle, fold one of the bottom corners up to meet the edge of the fold.

5. Fold the two edges slightly in towards the middle, keeping some of the edges overlapping on the edge. This will become your cats ears!

6. Now, flip your cat over and grab your marker. You can add a face and colour in the ears, and give your cool cat a name! What will you call your cat?
