Handy Tips & Tricks for Using Air Hardening Clay

Knead well:
Condition the clay by kneading it thoroughly before use. This helps remove air bubbles, improves consistency, and distributes moisture evenly throughout the clay.

Prevent sticking:
Work on a non-stick surface such as baking paper, a silicone mat, or a smooth wooden board to make shaping and lifting your clay creations easier.

Joining pieces:
To attach clay pieces securely, score (scratch) the surfaces you wish to join and apply a small amount of water or clay slip before pressing the pieces firmly together.

Dry slowly:
Allow finished pieces to air-dry naturally. Depending on the thickness and size of your sculpture, drying can take approximately 24 to 72 hours.

Avoid drafts and heat:
Do not place clay projects directly in front of heaters, fans, or strong airflow. Rapid or uneven drying can cause cracking and damage.

Prevent warping:
For larger or shaped pieces such as bowls, turn them upside down partway through drying. This helps the base and rim dry evenly and reduces the risk of distortion.

Sealing:
Once your project is completely bone-dry, apply a clear varnish, shellac, or diluted craft glue mixture before painting. Sealing the surface helps prevent the clay from absorbing moisture from paint.

Painting:
After sealing, decorate your finished piece using standard acrylic paints. Add colour, patterns, or mixed-media details to personalise your artwork.

Create a permanent ceramic finish:
Unlike many air-dry clays, Blackwattle MAD Clay can be kiln fired to create a more durable ceramic finish.

Firing process:
Ensure pieces are completely bone-dry before placing them in the kiln. The clay can be fired to bisque, earthenware, or mid-fire temperatures as required. Expect approximately 6% shrinkage during firing.

Functional limitations:
Whether fired or unfired, this clay remains highly absorbent. It is recommended for decorative and ornamental projects only and is not suitable for food-safe or functional ware.

5. Storage

Keep unused clay from the 5kg block tightly wrapped in plastic and stored inside an airtight container or zip-lock bag. Proper storage will help prevent the clay from drying out and keep it ready for future creative projects.
