Wake your pans up first. Before you start, drop a little clean water onto every pan you plan to use and give them a minute. Re-wetted pans release colour far more generously, so your first wash is rich instead of streaky, and you spend less time scrubbing at the paint.

The aqua brush is the star of the travel kit. Art Spectrum describes its aqua brushes as refillable, with a built in water supply and a flexible nylon tip that holds its point and will not fray like natural hair. Squeeze the barrel gently to wet the tip, paint, then wipe the brush on a tissue to clean it between colours.

The sea sponge earns its place too. Art Spectrum notes that natural sponges hold large amounts of water and create natural texture, which is perfect for dabbing in foliage, softening skies and lifting out clouds.

How We Use a Travel Watercolour Set

Pack the set with a small watercolour journal or a pad of cotton paper, a couple of tissues and a pencil. Sketch lightly, block in big shapes with a wet brush, then add details once the first layer is dry. Our 100% Cotton 15 sheet pads are lovely for finished pieces at home.
