How Transparent Yellow Medium behaves

This is a single-pigment colour: disazo condensation yellow (PY128), a transparent, intense yellow made for glazing rather than covering.

It is rated transparent. It will not cover anything. Over a dry layer it behaves like coloured glass, which is exactly what glazing and shadow work need.

Where Transparent Yellow Medium earns its place

Yellow is a mixing colour before it is a painting colour. It goes into greens, oranges, flesh tones and grounds, so it leaves the jar faster than anything except white.

  • Botanical and floral work, which consumes yellow at a rate that surprises people
  • Mixing the full range of greens with one blue, rather than buying six greens
  • Skin, where a small amount of yellow is what stops a mix going grey
  • Signage, illustration and anything that needs flat, even coverage

Mixing with it

Being a single-pigment colour, it stays clear in mixes. Three-pigment colours are already a compromise before you add anything, which is why they go muddy faster.

Why the 500ml jar

This comes down to how much paint you actually move. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Transparent Yellow Medium is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.

Surfaces and drying

Amsterdam Standard Series grips virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Thin layers can dry within half an hour, longer in heavy application, and it cures water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions

What colours mix well with Transparent Yellow Medium?

All Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, and Transparent Yellow Medium behaves predictably in mixes given it is transparent. Start by mixing it with titanium white for tints and with a small amount of its complementary colour to knock back the intensity rather than reaching for black, which tends to deaden a mix. Keep a swatch card of your mixes with the ratios written on it, because you will want to repeat one later.

How lightfast is Amsterdam Transparent Yellow Medium?

Transparent Yellow Medium is rated +++ on Royal Talens' scale. Three pluses means the colour is rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions, two pluses at least 25 years. Museum conditions means indoors and out of direct sunlight. That rating is why work painted in Amsterdam Standard Series is safe to sell, provided the buyer is not hanging it in a north-facing window.

Do you stock Transparent Yellow Medium in other sizes?

The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.

Who makes Amsterdam acrylic paint?

Royal Talens, based in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. The company was founded in 1899 and also makes Rembrandt oils and pastels, Van Gogh oils and watercolours, Cobra water-mixable oils, Ecoline liquid watercolour and Bruynzeel pencils. Amsterdam acrylics are manufactured in the Netherlands, not contract-made offshore, which is part of why batch-to-batch consistency is reliable when you are mixing a colour you need to match again later.

Can I click and collect from your Melbourne store?

Yes, Click and Collect is available from our Moorabbin store, for Melbourne metro customers. Order online and the Click and Collect option appears as a delivery method once you enter your address. Allow 1 to 3 business days for your order to be picked and packed, and we will email you when it is ready. Orders need to be collected within 4 business days of that notification. Someone else can collect on your behalf if they have the order number.

Should I varnish an acrylic painting?

It is optional for durability indoors, since acrylic cures water resistant on its own, but it is worth doing for anything that will be handled, sold, displayed in a public space or ever need cleaning. Varnish gives you a sacrificial layer that takes the dust and can be removed and replaced. Wait until the painting is properly cured, which means days not hours, and longer over thick texture. Choose gloss, satin or matte deliberately, because it changes the look.

Can I use Amsterdam acrylic for a mural?

Yes, it is a common mural choice, and the alkali resistance is the reason. It adheres to stone, plaster, concrete and render without a specialist masonry primer, provided the wall is clean, sound and slightly porous. For an exterior mural, finish with a UV resistant exterior varnish. The paint's lightfastness rating assumes indoor museum conditions, and an Australian north-facing wall is a very different ask.

How do I get dried acrylic paint out of clothes?

Act while it is wet if you possibly can, because soap and cold water lifts wet acrylic easily. Once it has cured it is a plastic film bonded into the fibres and there is no reliable removal. People have some success softening it with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated paint remover and working at it with a brush, but the fabric usually shows the damage. The real answer is an apron and old clothes.

Is Amsterdam acrylic suitable for sets, props and model making?

Very. The 500ml and 1 litre sizes and the medium viscosity are both suited to covering area fast. It takes to MDF, plywood, cardboard, foam that has been sealed first, plaster and most primed surfaces, dries fast enough to recoat the same day, and the metallic and reflex fluorescent colours in the range cover effects that would otherwise need spray.
