Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Metallic Red (832) is a mica-based metallic acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It combines coated mica with pyrrole red. It is semi-transparent, with a lightfastness of +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.

The short answer: Go big on the colours you actually empty. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times a 120ml tube. Go small on the ones you dot in, or it will skin over before you finish it.

How Metallic Red behaves

Most acrylics get their colour from pigment alone. This one gets it from coated mica, a mineral that splits into flat reflective platelets. Brush it out and those platelets lie down parallel to the surface, so the colour shifts as you move past it. Straight on you see the colour. At an angle it flares.

It is semi-transparent, which is the single most useful thing to know. The mica lets light through to whatever sits underneath and bounces it back, so the ground changes the result completely.

  • Over black or a dark ground, the shimmer reads at full strength and the colour goes deep. This is the way to use it.
  • Over white or raw canvas, it looks pale and chalky.
  • Brushed one direction, the mica aligns and the sheen is even. Scrubbed every which way, it scatters and dulls.
  • Thinned with water, the mica separates and the effect collapses. Use acrylic medium instead.

Where Metallic Red earns its place

Red is the colour people buy small and then regret, because it goes into far more mixes than it appears in.

  • Warming a shadow, which usually wants red rather than black
  • Portraiture, where red is the base of almost every skin mix
  • Knocking back a green, since red is its complement
  • Large blocked-in areas, which is what the 500ml size is for

Why the 500ml jar

Ask yourself how often you have run out mid-session. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Metallic Red is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.

Surfaces and drying

Surfaces are rarely the problem with this range. Anything slightly porous works: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. A thin layer can be dry inside half an hour. Thick passages take much longer, and touch dry is not the same as cured. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix Metallic Red with other colours?

Yes, all Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, but adding an opaque colour to a metallic buries the mica flakes in solid pigment and reduces the shimmer. If you want a metallic version of another colour, glaze a thin layer of Metallic Red over the opaque colour once it is dry rather than mixing the two on the palette. Mixing metallic into metallic works fine and is a good way to shift the tone.

Does varnish affect the metallic effect?

Yes, more than it affects a plain colour. Gloss varnish deepens the flare and makes Metallic Red look richer. Matte varnish scatters the reflected light and will noticeably mute the metallic, sometimes to the point of losing the effect. Satin sits in between. Always test on a painted sample board before varnishing the finished piece, because this is not a change you can undo.

What pigments are in Amsterdam Metallic Red?

Metallic Red (colour number 832) uses Coated Mica/PR254. It is rated semi-transparent with a lightfastness of +++. The coated mica is what produces the metallic effect: it splits into flat, reflective mineral platelets that align as you brush the paint out, so the surface catches and returns light rather than simply absorbing it the way a conventional pigment does.

Is Amsterdam a good acrylic paint?

Yes. Amsterdam is made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands, a company that has been making artists' colours since 1899. The Standard Series is a general purpose acrylic built for people who paint a lot, with a 100% acrylic resin binder, a satin finish and lightfastness ratings of ++ or +++ across the range. It is not a heavily pigmented professional colour like Golden Heavy Body, and it is not trying to be. What it is, is a dependable, permanent acrylic you can use freely rather than ration.

Do you deliver art supplies to Perth, Darwin and regional Australia?

Yes, we ship Australia wide including WA, the Northern Territory, regional and remote areas. Allow about 2 to 3 business days with Express Post and 6 to 8 business days with Standard Post to those destinations after dispatch. Larger and heavier orders go by Startrack courier rather than Australia Post, which takes about 6 to 8 business days to WA, the NT, Tasmania and remote areas. Tracking is provided on everything.

How long does Amsterdam acrylic take to dry?

Thin layers can dry within half an hour. Thick, impasto applications take considerably longer, sometimes overnight, and a heavy texture can stay soft underneath for days even when the surface feels dry. Heat and airflow speed it up, humidity slows it down, which matters in a Brisbane summer. Touch dry is not cured. Allow a good few days before varnishing, and longer over heavy texture.

Can I paint furniture with acrylic paint?

Yes. Clean and lightly sand the piece, prime bare or previously varnished timber with an acrylic primer or gesso, then build two or three thin coats rather than one heavy one. The important step is the finish: seal it with a hard-wearing clear polyurethane or an acrylic varnish rated for furniture, because raw acrylic on a tabletop will mark and scuff. Allow proper curing time before you put anything on it.

Is acrylic paint waterproof once dry?

It cures water resistant and permanent, which is enough for an indoor painting and enough to survive being wiped. It is not the same as a waterproof coating, so for anything living outdoors, getting scrubbed, or holding water, seal it with an exterior or hard-wearing clear varnish. Note also that it needs to be fully cured, not just touch dry, before it reaches that water resistance, which means days rather than minutes.

Is Amsterdam Standard Series the same as Amsterdam Expert Series?

No. Standard Series runs around 90 colours at one consistent grade, medium viscosity, satin finish. Expert Series uses higher pigment concentrations, more single-pigment colours and traditional artist pigments including cadmiums and cobalts, organised into series bands by pigment. Choose Standard for scale, teaching and mixing in volume. Choose Expert when you want maximum tinting strength and the cleanest possible mixes.
