Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Metallic Blue (834) is a mica-based metallic acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It combines coated mica with phthalocyanine blue. It is semi-transparent, with a lightfastness of +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.

The short answer: Buy the 500ml jar if you paint large, mix custom colours, teach, or run a mural or prop job. One jar holds about 4.2 times a 120ml tube. Buy the tube if this is an accent colour.

How Metallic Blue behaves

Most acrylics get their colour from pigment alone. This one gets it from coated mica, a mineral that splits into flat reflective platelets. Brush it out and those platelets lie down parallel to the surface, so the colour shifts as you move past it. Straight on you see the colour. At an angle it flares.

It is semi-transparent, which is the single most useful thing to know. The mica lets light through to whatever sits underneath and bounces it back, so the ground changes the result completely.

  • Over black or a dark ground, the shimmer reads at full strength and the colour goes deep. This is the way to use it.
  • Over white or raw canvas, it looks pale and chalky.
  • Brushed one direction, the mica aligns and the sheen is even. Scrubbed every which way, it scatters and dulls.
  • Thinned with water, the mica separates and the effect collapses. Use acrylic medium instead.

Where Metallic Blue earns its place

Blue is the second colour to run out after white, because sky, water and shadow all want it in quantity.

  • Seascapes and skies, painted wet and in volume
  • Building a full range of greens from one blue and one yellow
  • Night scenes and interiors, where blue is doing the value work
  • Mixing a chromatic black with a burnt earth, which beats a tube black

Mixing with it

This contains a phthalocyanine pigment, which has enormous tinting strength. Add it to a mix a fraction at a time, because a brush load too many will take the whole mix with it.

Why the 500ml jar

This comes down to how much paint you actually move. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Metallic Blue is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.

Surfaces and drying

Amsterdam Standard Series grips virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Thin layers can dry within half an hour, longer in heavy application, and it cures water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions

What pigments are in Amsterdam Metallic Blue?

Metallic Blue (colour number 834) uses Coated Mica/PB15. It is rated semi-transparent with a lightfastness of +++. The coated mica is what produces the metallic effect: it splits into flat, reflective mineral platelets that align as you brush the paint out, so the surface catches and returns light rather than simply absorbing it the way a conventional pigment does.

Why does my metallic acrylic look dull?

Three usual causes. You painted it over white or a light ground, and mica reflects whatever sits behind it, so any metallic that lets light through goes chalky over a pale surface. You scrubbed it on in every direction, which scatters the mica flakes instead of aligning them, so brush in one consistent direction. Or you thinned it with too much water, which separates the mica from the binder. Thin with an acrylic medium rather than water if you need it looser.

What colour should I paint under Metallic Blue?

That depends on how much this one covers, and Metallic Blue is semi-transparent. A metallic that lets light through is at the mercy of its ground: over black or a deep blue underpainting it flares properly, and over white or raw canvas it goes pale and chalky. One that covers in its own right is far less fussy and will shimmer straight over a light surface, though a darker ground still deepens it. Either way, let the ground dry completely before laying the metallic over it in one or two even coats.

How does Amsterdam compare to other student acrylics?

The honest comparison is on three things: permanence, consistency and range. Amsterdam Standard Series carries ++ or +++ lightfastness across the line, has a medium buttery viscosity that holds a brush mark without being stiff, and runs to around 90 colours including metallics, reflex fluorescents and specialty finishes. Some competing student ranges are thinner, some are stiffer, and several carry fewer colours or do not publish lightfastness at all. If a range will not tell you its lightfastness, that is the thing to notice.

Do you ship art supplies to New Zealand?

Yes, we ship to New Zealand. Orders are charged in Australian dollars, and import duties, taxes and levies charged by New Zealand are not included in the order total or the postage and are the recipient's responsibility, so check locally before you order. We are not currently shipping to countries other than Australia and New Zealand.

Can I mix Amsterdam with other brands of acrylic paint?

Yes. All artist acrylics share the same acrylic resin chemistry, so Amsterdam mixes freely with Liquitex, Golden, Matisse, Atelier and any other acrylic, and with acrylic mediums and gesso. What will differ between brands is viscosity and pigment load, so a stiff heavy body colour mixed into Amsterdam will thicken the mix, and a very high-pigment colour will dominate a mix faster than you expect. Mix a test swatch before you commit a large batch.

Is Amsterdam acrylic suitable for sets, props and model making?

Very. The 500ml and 1 litre sizes and the medium viscosity are both suited to covering area fast. It takes to MDF, plywood, cardboard, foam that has been sealed first, plaster and most primed surfaces, dries fast enough to recoat the same day, and the metallic and reflex fluorescent colours in the range cover effects that would otherwise need spray.

Is acrylic paint safe for children and classrooms?

Amsterdam Standard Series is water based, odourless and cleans up with soap and water, which is why it is widely used in Australian schools and community workshops. It is still an artists' material rather than a toy paint, so normal classroom practice applies: check the label and safety data sheet for the specific colour, supervise young children, keep it away from mouths, and ventilate as you would for any art activity. We can supply safety data sheets for any product on request.

Do you supply schools, studios and bulk orders?

Yes. Schools, universities, community art programmes and studios are a large part of what we do, and the 500ml and 1 litre sizes exist for exactly this reason. If you need quantities across multiple colours, or a quote on school letterhead, contact us rather than working through the cart and we will put it together properly, including availability and lead time on anything we would need to bring in.
