Amsterdam Acrylic Paint 500ml Bottle - Naples Yellow Red
Our everyday low price
Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Naples Yellow Red (224) is an opaque yellow acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from titanium white, chrome titanate and pyrrole orange. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.
The short answer: This size is for volume work. One jar is about 4.2 times a 120ml tube, and the wide mouth takes a palette knife. If you use this colour now and then, the tube is the better fit.
Specifications at a glance
How Naples Yellow Red behaves
The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:
- PW6, titanium white: a dense, highly opaque white that lifts a colour towards a tint and kills transparency
- PBr24, chrome titanate: a muted mineral tan that gives a colour a soft, dusty body
- PO73, pyrrole orange: a strong, warm modern orange with high tinting strength
It is rated opaque. It covers what is underneath in one or two coats, so it is a colour you block in with, correct with, and build on.
Because titanium white is already in the mix, this sits in the tint range rather than at full chroma. More white will lighten it but will not make it cleaner. For a more saturated version, tint the pure pigment colour yourself instead.
Where Naples Yellow Red earns its place
Yellow is a mixing colour before it is a painting colour. It goes into greens, oranges, flesh tones and grounds, so it leaves the jar faster than anything except white.
- Botanical and floral work, which consumes yellow at a rate that surprises people
- Mixing the full range of greens with one blue, rather than buying six greens
- Skin, where a small amount of yellow is what stops a mix going grey
- Signage, illustration and anything that needs flat, even coverage
Mixing with it
The earth and mineral pigments in this colour are what keep it civilised. They mute a mix rather than dominating it, so this is a safe colour to knock a loud one back with.
With three or more pigments already in the jar, this colour is doing some mixing for you. That makes it convenient and consistent, but it means mixes made from it go neutral faster than mixes made from single-pigment colours.
Why the 500ml jar
It depends entirely on your working scale. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Naples Yellow Red is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.
Surfaces and drying
The Standard Series binder holds on virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Drying is quick, within half an hour for a thin layer, and the cured film is water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions
Do you stock Naples Yellow Red in other sizes?
The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.
What pigments are in Amsterdam Naples Yellow Red?
Naples Yellow Red (colour number 224) uses PW6/PBr24/PO73. It is rated opaque with a lightfastness of +++. Knowing the pigment code matters more than the colour name, because names vary between brands while pigment index codes do not. If you are matching a colour across brands or checking permanence, the code is the thing to compare.
Is Naples Yellow Red opaque or transparent?
Naples Yellow Red is opaque. That determines how you should use it. An opaque colour covers what is beneath it in one or two coats and is what you want for blocking in and correcting. A semi-transparent or transparent colour lets the layer underneath influence the result, which makes it ideal for glazing and shadow work but frustrating if you are trying to cover something. Check the swatch on the jar against a black bar to see it for yourself.
Is Amsterdam acrylic paint vegan and not tested on animals?
Royal Talens states that Amsterdam acrylics contain no animal-derived ingredients and are not tested on animals. Pigments and binders are synthetic or mineral. If this matters for a specific colour or for a school or institutional purchase, ask us and we will get the current safety data sheet and manufacturer statement for that exact product code rather than giving you a general answer.
Where can I buy Amsterdam acrylics near me?
If you are in Melbourne, our Moorabbin store carries the Amsterdam range on the shelf, and you can use Click and Collect to reserve online and pick up, usually ready in 1 to 3 business days. If you are in Brisbane, our West End store stocks it too. Everywhere else in Australia, we ship direct from our warehouses with tracking on every order, and Express Post reaches most metro areas in 1 to 2 business days after dispatch.
Do I need to prime my canvas before using Amsterdam acrylic?
Pre-primed canvas from the shop is ready to paint on. Raw canvas, raw board and bare timber should be primed with acrylic gesso first, two thin coats sanded lightly between, which gives you a stable, slightly toothy surface and stops the binder sinking straight in. On masonry, render or concrete the surface needs to be clean, sound and slightly porous, and Amsterdam's alkali resistance means it will hold there without a specialist primer.
Can I use acrylic paint on a wall in my house?
Yes, for feature walls, murals and children's rooms. Artist acrylic is far more pigmented than house paint, so it covers in fewer coats and goes further per litre than you would expect, which is why people usually use it for the artwork itself and standard wall paint for the surrounding field. Make sure the wall is clean and free of grease, and keep in mind that artist acrylic in a satin finish will not scrub like a washable interior paint unless you seal it.
How do I dispose of acrylic paint and rinse water?
Do not tip liquid acrylic or heavily pigmented rinse water down the sink or a storm drain. Let leftover paint dry out fully in the container, then put the solid in general waste. For rinse water, let the solids settle in a bucket, decant the clear water, and dry out the sludge before binning it. For larger quantities, or if you are unsure, check with your local council, which will have a household chemical drop-off.
Why is my acrylic paint cracking?
Usually one of three causes. You painted a thick layer over a layer that was not fully cured underneath, so the top skinned and the bottom shrank. You over-thinned with water, which weakened the binder. Or you applied it very thickly in a hot, dry, windy spot so the surface set long before the body did. The fixes are: thinner layers, proper drying time between them, thin with medium rather than water, and keep a heavy application out of direct heat.
