Is Diamond Dust Safe? Sharpness and Safety

Here is the honest bit. The same thing that makes Diamond Dust sparkle like nothing else is what makes it different to craft glitter: it is real glass. Each flake is a tiny, sharp shard. Treat it like you would broken glass in miniature and you will have a great time with it.

Sharpness and physical risks

• Tiny glass shards. The flakes are glass, so they can cause splinters, small cuts and skin irritation, especially when rubbed or handled loose.
• Wear gloves. Wear gloves whenever you handle it loose, and never rub it into your skin or wipe it off with a bare hand.
• Finished pieces. Once dry, tap off the excess and seal it under a clear coat of varnish or gel medium so no loose shards are left on the surface for hands to brush against.
• Kids and pets. Keep the jar out of reach and work where pets cannot walk through spills. Children should only use it with an adult right beside them.

Eyes, breathing and food

• Protect your eyes. Keep it well away from your eyes and do not rub them while you work. Safety glasses are a good idea.
• Do not make a cloud. Sprinkle it gently from a little height rather than shaking or blowing it around, so fine particles do not end up in the air you breathe. Work in a well ventilated space and wear a dust mask if you are using a lot.
• Never near food. Keep it away from food, drinks and kitchen surfaces, and never use it on cakes, cups or anything that touches your mouth.

Clean up like a pro

• Cover your work area first. Lay down newspaper, an old canvas or a drop cloth so the excess is caught and can be tipped back into the jar.
• Never sweep with your hands. Pick up stray flakes with a damp paper towel or sticky tape, or vacuum them, then wipe the surface down.
• Store it safely. Screw the lid on tight and store the jar up high, away from children and pets.
