How to sharpen a Charcoal Pencil

Tip: Many artists keep a small sanding pad nearby because it's the quickest way to maintain the perfect point while drawing.

Method 1: Craft knife (best for artists)

1. Hold the pencil firmly with the tip pointing away from you.

2. Using a sharp craft knife or utility knife, carefully shave away the wood, exposing about ½–1 inch (1–2.5 cm) of the charcoal core.

3. Rotate the pencil as you shave to keep the exposed core even.

4. Refine the point by gently rubbing the charcoal on a piece of fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding block until it reaches the shape you want.
