About the Great Wave Design

This design is inspired by The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the woodblock print made by the Japanese artist Hokusai around 1831. Its towering blue wave and claw-like foam are recognised all over the world. Building it in layers is a nice nod to the original, which was itself printed from carved wooden blocks.

How It Works

1. Lay it out. Unpack the wooden layers and arrange them in order from the back layer to the front.
2. Paint each layer. Follow the colour guide or invent your own scheme. Paint the edges too.
3. Let it dry. Give every layer time to dry fully so nothing smudges when you stack them.
4. Stack and stick. Glue or tape the layers together in order and watch the design rise off the board.
5. Display it. Hang it on the wall or prop it on a shelf.

Tips for Your Great Wave

Use two or three blues, from deep navy to pale sky, and paint the layers from darkest at the back to lightest at the front for real depth.
