Sakura Koi Watercolour Pocket Box - 18 Colours + Water Brush
Here is the honest reason this box outsells the fancy ones. It is not the paint. It is that everything you need is in one shell that shuts, and nothing inside it leaks. No water jar balanced on a wall. No loose brush rolling off the bench. You open the lid, the lid becomes the easel, and you are painting inside ten seconds.
The Sakura Koi Pocket Box in 18 colours is the size most people land on after they have owned a 12 and wished for greens. Eighteen half pans, a refillable water brush, a mixing palette that pegs on either side, two sponges and a finger ring underneath so you can paint standing up with the whole kit in one hand.
★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Leave the lid open for a few minutes after you finish so the pans dry before you close it. Wet pans pressed against a closed lid will print colour onto it and muddy your next mix. Everything else about this box is forgiving, but that one is worth the habit.
Perfect for
What is in the box
18 half pans
Eighteen Koi half pan watercolours, formulated to blend easily so you can mix well beyond the eighteen you start with.
Water brush
A refillable Koi water brush with a 9ml reservoir barrel and a detachable medium tip. Fill it once and paint without a water jar.
Easel lid
The lid snaps open and holds postcard sized paper upright, so the box becomes its own little easel on a park bench.
Pegged palette
A detachable mixing palette that pegs onto the base at the right, the left or the centre, so it works left or right handed.
Two sponges
Two dabbing sponges sit in the base for controlling how much water is in the brush before it touches the paper.
Pull-down ring
A ring on the underside folds out so you can hold the whole kit in one hand and paint with the other, standing up.
The 18 colours
This is a working palette rather than a pretty one. You get a warm and a cool version of each primary, which is what actually lets you mix cleanly, plus three greens so foliage does not have to be built from scratch, three earths for stone, timber and skin, and a white and a black.
Eighteen pans is the point where a pocket box stops feeling like a compromise. With twelve you spend your time mixing greens and browns. With eighteen they are already there, so you spend your time painting.
How it works in the field
The lid is the easel. It snaps open and holds postcard sized paper upright at an angle, which means you do not need a table or a lap. For a lot of people this is the feature that turns a set they own into a set they use.
The palette moves. The mixing palette is pegged and detachable, and it clips to the right, the left or the centre of the base. Left handed painters are not an afterthought here.
The ring does more than it looks like. A pull-down ring on the underside lets you grip the whole box in one hand. That sounds minor until you are standing in a laneway with nowhere to put anything down.
The water brush replaces the jar. A 9ml barrel holds enough water for a decent session, feeds the bristles when you squeeze, and seals for transport. The two sponges in the base are how you control the load before the brush touches paper.
About the paint
Koi is a matte Japanese watercolour built for sketching and journaling rather than for gallery archival work, and it is honest about that. What you get in exchange is paint that rewets the instant a wet brush touches it, blends without fighting you, and lifts cleanly enough that mistakes are recoverable. It will run from transparent washes through to fairly opaque coverage depending on how much water you carry.
If you are coming from professional pans you will notice Koi is less intense and less granulating. If you are coming from a school paint box you will think it is a revelation. Both reactions are correct. It is a sketching paint, and it is very good at being one.
The pans lift out, so you can replace a colour you burn through, refill an empty pan from a tube, or swap one you never touch for one you do.
Getting the most out of it
Carry less water than you think. The most common beginner problem with a water brush is flooding the page. Squeeze once, touch a sponge, then paint. You can always add water, you cannot easily take it away.
Use the paper you would use for a wash. The paint is not the limiting factor, the surface is. Anything from 200gsm upwards will hold a light wash, and 300gsm will take real wet work without cockling. Have a look at our watercolour pads if your current sketchbook is buckling.
Ink first, then wash. This set pairs naturally with waterproof pigment liners from the same manufacturer. Draw in fineliner, let it dry, then lay colour over the top. It is the classic urban sketching method and it hides a multitude of drawing sins.
Swatch it once. Paint every pan onto a strip of your usual paper and keep it in the lid. Pan colours look nothing like their painted colour, and thirty seconds of swatching saves you guessing every time you open the box.

Questions about the Koi 18 Pocket Box
What colours are in the Sakura Koi 18 pocket box?
The eighteen half pans are Chinese White, Lemon Yellow, Permanent Yellow Deep, Jaune Brilliant, Vermilion Hue, Crimson Lake, Purple, Cobalt Blue Hue, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Yellow Green, Viridian Hue, Permanent Green Deep, Yellow Ochre, Light Red, Burnt Umber and Ivory Black. It is a deliberately balanced spread: a warm and a cool of each primary, three greens, three earths, plus a white and a black, which is enough to mix almost anything you meet outdoors.
Is the water brush included?
Yes. A Koi water brush is in the box, with a 9ml refillable reservoir barrel and a detachable medium tip. You squeeze the barrel to feed water into the bristles, which means no water jar, no spills in a bag and no hunting for a tap. The barrel also stores your water while the kit is packed away.
Do I need anything else to start painting?
Only paper. The box supplies the colours, the brush, the water carrier, the mixing palette and the sponges, and the lid props your paper up. A pad of watercolour paper and this box is a complete kit you can put in a jacket pocket.
Are Koi watercolours student grade or artist grade?
Koi sits in the bracket most people call student or mid grade. It is a matte Japanese watercolour built for sketching, journaling and learning rather than for archival exhibition work. The trade off is deliberate: it rewets instantly, it blends easily, it is forgiving when you are learning, and it invites you to use paint heavily rather than ration it, which is exactly what learning needs.
How do the pans rewet?
Touch a wet brush to the pan and the colour lifts straight away. Koi is formulated to rewet quickly, which matters a lot outdoors where you do not want to scrub at a hard pan while the light changes. Let the pans dry with the lid open before you close the box, so the colours do not print onto the lid.
Can I refill or replace individual pans?
Yes. The pans lift out of the tray, so you can replace a colour you use heavily, swap in a different one, or refill an empty pan from a tube. This is one of the practical advantages of a pan set over a moulded palette.
How does the 18 compare to the other Koi pocket box sizes?
The Koi pocket boxes run from 12 colours up to 48. The 12 is the true minimum for pocket carry. The 18 adds the greens and earths that make landscape and street sketching much easier without mixing every one from scratch. The 24 and above start adding convenience colours and a larger footprint. If you sketch outdoors and want one box that covers most subjects, the 18 is the sensible middle.
Is it good for beginners?
It is one of the better beginner sets, for a reason that has nothing to do with the paint: everything is in one box and nothing leaks. Beginners give up on watercolour because of logistics as often as technique. Take away the water jar, the loose brushes and the separate palette, and you will actually paint.
Will the colours bleed through my sketchbook?
That depends on the paper, not the paint. Watercolour needs paper built for water, ideally 200gsm or heavier, and properly 300gsm for wet work. A standard sketchbook page will cockle and may bleed through. Look at a watercolour pad or a mixed media pad if you plan to work wet.
Is the palette usable if I am left handed?
Yes. The mixing palette is pegged and detachable, and it mounts on the right, the left or the centre of the base, so you can set the kit up whichever way round suits you.
Who makes Koi watercolours?
Sakura Color Products Corporation of Osaka, Japan, the company behind Pigma Micron fineliners and Gelly Roll gel pens. Koi is their watercolour line, sold internationally through Royal Talens.
Where can I buy Sakura Koi watercolours in Australia?
Art Shed stocks the Koi range online and ships Australia wide from our own warehouses, and you can buy over the counter at our Moorabbin store in Melbourne, or our West End store in Brisbane.
