Six pens, three different inks, one colour family. If you have only ever used the standard Gelly Roll, this set is a fast way to find out which of Sakura's speciality lines you actually like, without buying three full sets to find out.

★ ART SHED STAFF TIP

Scribble each pen on a scrap of the paper you are actually using before you start. The Stardust two behave differently to the other four, and it is better to find that out on scrap than halfway through a page.

Approximate colour reference only. Screen calibration and paper colour both change how these read, and metallic and glitter inks in particular cannot be shown properly as a flat chip.

The thing worth understanding before you open it is that this is not six versions of the same pen. Sakura have put two pens from each of three different speciality lines in the box. Moonlight is the opaque line, built to cover. Metallic carries reflective particles. Stardust suspends fine glitter in a translucent colour. They behave differently on the page and that is the reason to buy a sampler rather than six of one.

All six are 10 Bold, so the ball is 1.0 mm across. That matters more than it sounds. A narrow ball cannot carry enough of a heavily loaded ink to cover in one pass, which is why thin metallic and opaque pens always look patchy. The bold point is what makes these lay down solid.

How to get the most out of a sampler

Work out which two you reach for first and buy those singly. That is what a sampler is for. Beyond that, the Moonlight and Metallic pairs are your dark paper pens, so save them for black, navy and kraft. The Stardust pair are happiest on light or matte stock where the glitter has something to catch against, and Sakura note the sparkle can lift over time, so keep them for decorative work rather than anything you want to last a lifetime.

Questions about the Gelly Roll Pink & Purple set

What are the Stardust pens in this set?

Stardust is Sakura's glitter line. The ink carries fine suspended sparkle rather than a solid metallic sheen, so it reads as a shimmer inside a translucent colour. Sakura recommend it on light coloured or matte surfaces and note that the sparkle can lift over time, so treat it as decorative rather than archival.

Will these really show up on black paper?

Yes, and Sakura say so directly. The ink is opaque, which is the whole point of the Moonlight and Metallic lines. Sakura's own wording is worth repeating though: they specify quality black paper. Black stock with a loose, chalky surface drinks the ink and the result is duller.

What point size are these pens?

All six are 10 Bold, which is Sakura's code for a 1.0 mm ball. It is the widest of the three common Gelly Roll points, so the line lays down thick and solid rather than fine. That is deliberate. A wide ball is what lets an opaque or metallic ink cover properly in one pass instead of looking streaky.

What surfaces will the metallics write on?

More than you would expect. Sakura state that Gelly Roll Metallic writes on light and dark papers as well as glossy and matte surfaces. That takes it past paper and onto gift tags, baubles, coated card and photo stock, which is why this set disappears every December.

What is the difference between Moonlight and ordinary Gelly Roll?

Opacity. Standard Gelly Roll is the everyday gel line. Moonlight is the opaque one, formulated so the colour sits on top of the paper instead of mixing with it. Royal Talens describe it as a creamy, smooth, opaque ink and note that every colour produces outstanding effects on black paper.

Where can I buy Sakura pens in Australia?

Right here. Art Shed Online is an Australian stockist and we ship Australia wide from our own warehouses, with same day dispatch on orders placed before cut off. These come through the Australian distributor, not a grey import, so the codes and the packaging match what Sakura intend for this market.
