The quiet one, and the one we would grab first. Six opaque pastels including a proper white, which is the single most wanted pen for anyone lettering or drawing on black. Soft colours that still read clearly on a dark page, which sounds like a contradiction until you use them.

★ ART SHED STAFF TIP

Let the white dry properly before you go over it with anything, then lay a second coat straight down the same line. Two passes on black paper reads as solid white. One pass reads as grey and everyone gives up at that point.

Pastel and opaque do not usually go together. Most pale inks are pale because they are thin, so on a dark page they vanish. These are pale because the pigment load is white heavy, not because the ink is weak, which is why a pastel yellow still reads on black card.

These are the non fluorescent side of the Moonlight line, which means they use Sakura's pigment based ink. Sakura describe that ink as chemically stable, waterproof and fade resistant, and Royal Talens say every colour in the line produces outstanding effects on black paper. Let it cure, then wash over it, and the line holds.

Getting a clean white line on black

Slow down and press lightly. The instinct with an opaque pen is to bear down, which squashes the ball into the paper and starves the flow. Light pressure and a second pass beats heavy pressure and one. If you are lettering, do all your downstrokes first, let them dry, then come back for the joins, which stops you dragging a wet line sideways.

Questions about the Gelly Roll Moonlight Pastel set

What is the difference between Moonlight and ordinary Gelly Roll?

Opacity. Standard Gelly Roll is the everyday gel line. Moonlight is the opaque one, formulated so the colour sits on top of the paper instead of mixing with it. Royal Talens describe it as a creamy, smooth, opaque ink and note that every colour produces outstanding effects on black paper.

Will these really show up on black paper?

Yes, and Sakura say so directly. The ink is opaque, which is the whole point of the Moonlight and Metallic lines. Sakura's own wording is worth repeating though: they specify quality black paper. Black stock with a loose, chalky surface drinks the ink and the result is duller.

How long do they take to dry?

Gel ink sits on the surface rather than soaking in, so give it a few seconds longer than a ballpoint before you run your hand over it. Sakura say there is no smearing once dry. On glossy or coated stock it takes noticeably longer than on cartridge paper.

Can I use these for hand lettering?

Yes, and the bold point is the reason they work. You cannot get a thick and thin stroke out of a ball point the way you can with a brush pen, but a 1.0 mm ball gives you a consistent heavy monoline, which is exactly what modern monoline lettering and envelope addressing want.

Do all Moonlight pens glow under UV?

No, and this trips people up constantly. Only the fluorescent Moonlight colours glow under a black light. The pastels and the standard Moonlight colours are opaque but not fluorescent. Moonlight is the name of the opaque line, not a promise of glow.

Are these genuine stock or an import?

Genuine, supplied through the Australian distributor. Grey imported art materials turn up with wrong codes, missing safety information and no warranty path. Ours arrive the way the manufacturer intended, and they ship fast Australia wide from our own warehouses.
