Gold and silver plus four metallic colours, and they go well beyond paper. Sakura rate this ink for glossy and matte surfaces as well as light and dark papers, which is why this set empties off the shelf every December and comes back out for every birthday card after it.

★ ART SHED STAFF TIP

Store them flat in a drawer rather than nib up in a jar. Metallic ink carries heavier particles than ordinary gel ink, and the particles settle. Flat storage keeps the ball fed.

Approximate colour reference only. Screen calibration and paper colour both change how these read, and metallic and glitter inks in particular cannot be shown properly as a flat chip.

Metallic gel ink carries real reflective particles in suspension rather than a printed sheen, so the line changes as you tilt the page. That is why a metallic pen looks unimpressive in a flat photograph and obvious in the hand. On white paper it reads as a soft shimmer. On black or kraft it reads as actual metal.

The surface range is the part people miss. Sakura rate this ink for glossy and matte surfaces as well as light and dark papers, which takes it off the page and onto gift tags, coated card, baubles and photo stock. None of the other Gelly Roll sub lines carry that claim.

Beyond paper

Coated and glossy surfaces need longer to dry than cartridge paper, so do not stack tags on top of each other the moment you finish. If you are writing on a bauble or anything curved, work in short strokes and rotate the object rather than dragging the pen around the curve, which is what causes skipping. Test on the base of the object first.

Questions about the Gelly Roll Metallic set

What surfaces will the metallics write on?

More than you would expect. Sakura state that Gelly Roll Metallic writes on light and dark papers as well as glossy and matte surfaces. That takes it past paper and onto gift tags, baubles, coated card and photo stock, which is why this set disappears every December.

Will these really show up on black paper?

Yes, and Sakura say so directly. The ink is opaque, which is the whole point of the Moonlight and Metallic lines. Sakura's own wording is worth repeating though: they specify quality black paper. Black stock with a loose, chalky surface drinks the ink and the result is duller.

Why has my pen stopped writing when there is clearly ink left?

Almost always an air gap in the barrel after the pen has been stored nib up or carried loose in a bag. Store them flat or nib down, scribble on scrap for a few seconds, and the flow usually returns. Gel ink also skips on greasy or heavily worked surfaces.

Is metallic gel ink actually shiny or just pale?

Actually shiny. The ink carries real reflective particles rather than a printed sheen, so the line catches the light as you tilt it. On white paper it reads as a soft shimmer. On dark stock it reads as proper metal, which is the better use for it.

Do they work over the top of other media?

This is what they are best at. Gel ink layered over dry acrylic, gouache, coloured pencil or marker gives you highlights that actually sit on top rather than sinking in. Let the layer underneath dry properly first or the ball will pick up pigment.

Where can I buy Sakura pens in Australia?

Right here. Art Shed Online is an Australian stockist and we ship Australia wide from our own warehouses, with same day dispatch on orders placed before cut off. These come through the Australian distributor, not a grey import, so the codes and the packaging match what Sakura intend for this market.
