A cool half of the Gelly Roll speciality range in one pack. Two opaque Moonlights, two Metallics and two glitter Stardusts, all in blues and greens, which is the awkward end of the spectrum to buy one pen at a time.

★ ART SHED STAFF TIP

Try the two Metallics on kraft card before you try them on black. Warm brown throws metallic blue and green forward in a way black does not, and most people never think to put a cool metallic on a warm ground.

Blues and greens are the awkward end of a pen collection to build one at a time, because you need four of them before any of them look right next to each other. This pack gives you an ultramarine, a blue green, a metallic blue, a metallic green and two glitter stars, which between them cover water, sky, foliage and everything metallic in that range.

None of the six is a classic Gelly Roll. Two are Moonlight, Sakura's opaque line. Two are Metallic, carrying reflective particles. Two are Stardust, which suspends fine glitter in a translucent colour. Same 1.0 mm bold ball across all six, so they feel identical in the hand while behaving completely differently on the page.

Worth noting for anyone who cares about permanence: there is no fluorescent in this pack. The Moonlight colours here are the pigment based ones that Sakura describe as chemically stable, waterproof and fade resistant, and the Metallics carry the same claim.

Where each pair earns its place

Use the two Moonlights where you need the colour to sit on top of something dark, which is night skies, deep water and anything on navy or black card. Use the Metallics where you want the line to move as the page tilts, which is lettering, borders and tags. Save the Stardust pair for light or matte stock where the glitter has something to catch against. Sakura note the sparkle can lift over time, so they belong on decorative work rather than on anything going into a frame for twenty years.

Questions about the Gelly Roll Blue & Green set

Do all six pens in this set behave the same way?

No, and that is the point of it. Two are opaque Moonlight, two are Metallic and two are Stardust. The Moonlight and Metallic pairs will cover dark paper. Sakura make no dark paper claim for Stardust, which is happiest on light or matte stock.

Will these really show up on black paper?

Yes, and Sakura say so directly. The ink is opaque, which is the whole point of the Moonlight and Metallic lines. Sakura's own wording is worth repeating though: they specify quality black paper. Black stock with a loose, chalky surface drinks the ink and the result is duller.

Can I use these for hand lettering?

Yes, and the bold point is the reason they work. You cannot get a thick and thin stroke out of a ball point the way you can with a brush pen, but a 1.0 mm ball gives you a consistent heavy monoline, which is exactly what modern monoline lettering and envelope addressing want.

What surfaces will the metallics write on?

More than you would expect. Sakura state that Gelly Roll Metallic writes on light and dark papers as well as glossy and matte surfaces. That takes it past paper and onto gift tags, baubles, coated card and photo stock, which is why this set disappears every December.

What is the difference between Moonlight and ordinary Gelly Roll?

Opacity. Standard Gelly Roll is the everyday gel line. Moonlight is the opaque one, formulated so the colour sits on top of the paper instead of mixing with it. Royal Talens describe it as a creamy, smooth, opaque ink and note that every colour produces outstanding effects on black paper.

Do you ship these anywhere in Australia?

Yes, everywhere, including regional and remote addresses. Orders leave our own warehouses rather than a drop shipper, so what the website says is in stock is stock we are physically holding. You are buying from an Australian art shop with real storefronts, not an overseas marketplace listing.
