260 Years of Reeves

Reeves was founded in London in 1766, and in 2026 it celebrates 260 years of making art materials. Back in the 1700s the Reeves brothers helped change painting for good by selling watercolour in ready to use cakes, so artists no longer had to grind and mix their own colour before they could start. That idea, making good art materials easy to pick up and use, is still what Reeves is about.

The 260 Year Anniversary pieces are limited Christmas releases, finished with the gold 260 Years badge. Once they are gone, they are gone.

Getting the Most Out of Your Watercolour Tin

Wet the pans you plan to use with a drop of clean water a minute before you start. The colour softens and lifts much more easily onto your brush.

Paint on a proper watercolour paper of 300gsm or more, and let the case dry open before you close it.

Add some watercolour paper and watercolour brushes, browse all watercolour paint sets, or start smaller with the Reeves Watercolour Tin of 12.

Questions About the Reeves 260 Year Vintage Watercolour Tin of 160

What is in the Reeves Vintage Watercolour Tin of 160?

160 Reeves watercolour half pans, an aqua brush and a paint brush, in a carry case. It is a limited 260 Year Anniversary edition.

Is the Reeves 160 watercolour set good for beginners?

Yes. With 160 ready made colours there is very little mixing to learn, so beginners get bright results straight away. It is also great for journaling, sketching and anyone who loves having every colour to hand.

What is an aqua brush?

An aqua brush, also called a water brush, has a hollow handle you fill with water. Squeeze gently and the water flows to the tip, so you can paint with watercolour anywhere without a water jar. It is perfect for travel, sketching outdoors and painting on the couch.

What paper should I use with watercolour?

Use a proper watercolour paper of 300gsm or heavier. It holds water without buckling, so your colours stay bright and your washes stay smooth. Thin copy or cartridge paper will cockle and pill as soon as it gets wet.

How do I keep watercolour pans clean?

Rinse your brush before moving to a new colour and dab off excess water on a paper towel. If a pan gets muddy, wipe the surface with a damp brush or tissue and the clean colour is right underneath. Leave the lid open for a few minutes after painting so the pans dry before you close it.

Is this a good Christmas gift?

Yes. It is ready to use straight out of the box, it looks beautiful wrapped, and it suits everyone from a teen discovering painting to a grandparent picking up a new hobby.
