It never stains, scrapes clean in seconds and suits oils, acrylics and everything in between.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Keep a single edge razor scraper next to your palette. A quick scrape at the end of each session keeps the glass like new and saves you buying paper palettes ever again.

Using and Cleaning Your POSH Palette

Lay out your colours around the edge and mix in the middle. Acrylic can be left to dry and peeled off in sheets. For oils, scrape the palette clean with a razor scraper, or wipe it with a rag and artist solvent. Read the safety section below before you use a scraper.

The POSH range comes in more sizes and colours: Grey 9 x 12 inch, Grey 16 x 20 inch, Clear 9 x 12 inch, Clear 12 x 16 inch and Clear 16 x 20 inch.

Is a Glass Palette Safe? Glass and Scraper Safety

POSH palettes are real glass, so they deserve a little respect. Tempered glass is much stronger than ordinary glass, and if it ever does break it crumbles into small blunt pieces rather than long sharp shards. It is still heavy, and razor scrapers are sharp, so a few simple habits keep you safe.

⚠ Real Glass: Handle With Care
This is a sheet of tempered glass made for adult artists. It is a work surface, not a cutting board, and it is not a toy.

Lifting and storing

  • Carry it with two hands. The larger sizes are heavy. Hold it flat and keep it off the edge of the table.
  • Store it flat or upright and supported. Do not stack heavy tools or easels on top of it, and do not lean it where it can slide over.

Cleaning with a scraper

  • Scrape away from your body. Use a single edge razor blade in a retractable scraper and push away from your hands.
  • Use a fresh blade. A blunt or burred steel blade can scratch the glass. A plastic razor blade with solvent avoids scratching.
  • Retract the blade when you finish. Keep scrapers and blades out of reach of children.

Kids and pets

  • Adult use. Supervise children around the palette and the scraper, and keep both out of reach when not in use.

Questions About the POSH Grey Glass Palette 12 x 16 inch

What size is it?

12 x 16 inch, which is 30.5 x 40.6cm. The glass is 1/8 inch (about 3mm) thick tempered glass with seamed edges and corner guards.

Why use a grey palette?

Mid grey is the painter's neutral. Colours mixed on grey look the way they will on a toned canvas, so it is far easier to judge value and temperature than on a white palette. It is a favourite with oil and portrait painters.

How do I clean a glass palette?

Dried acrylic paint peels away from the glass. Dried oil paint lifts off with artist solvent or a single edge razor blade in a retractable scraper. Use a fresh blade, and a plastic blade if you want to avoid scratches.

What paints can I use on it?

All of them. Oils, acrylics, gouache, watercolour and inks all work, and nothing stains or soaks into glass. It also works as a mulling surface for making your own paint and as a plate for monoprinting.

Will it fit my Masterson or Sta-Wet box?

The 9 x 12 inch and 12 x 16 inch POSH palettes are made to fit Masterson Art Palette Seal and Sta-Wet palette storage boxes, so you can keep oils fresh between sessions. The 16 x 20 inch size is a table top palette.

Is a glass palette safe to use?

Yes, with sensible care. POSH palettes are tempered glass, which is much stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards. Lift it with two hands, scrape away from your body with a fresh blade, and keep the scraper away from children.

Will a razor blade scratch the glass?

A fresh blade held flat should not. Old steel blades can have burrs that scratch, so change blades often, or use a plastic razor blade with solvent if you want zero risk of scratches.
