Four blues. Because Australian coastal water is not one colour. The Matisse Structure Seascape Colours Set is built around the full range of Australian marine colour: the vivid cold intensity of Phthalo Blue for deep ocean swell, the near-black depth of Prussian Blue for storm water and rock shadow, the distinctive cold grey-teal of Southern Ocean Blue for that particular quality of southern Australian coastal light, and Ultramarine Blue for warm harbour and late-afternoon water. Add Phthalo Green for shallow tropical water and rock pool life, Naples Yellow Light and Yellow Oxide for golden sand and warm sky reflections, Brilliant Alizarin for the drama of sunrise and sunset at sea. Two mediums complete the set. Made by Derivan in Sydney.

Art Shed Staff Tip
Titanium White is not included in this set. For painting breaking waves, foam, and bright sky, pick up a 75ml tube separately. Without white you can lighten with Naples Yellow Light for warm golden tones, but true foam and surf brightness needs white. For the deepest ocean darks, mix Prussian Blue with a touch of Brilliant Alizarin: you get a rich, complex dark that reads as deep water far more convincingly than any single colour.

The four blues in this set are not interchangeable. Phthalo Blue is cold, vivid, and dominant in mixes: use it for the intense turquoise of tropical shallows and the deep hue of open ocean. Prussian Blue is darker, slightly green-leaning, and extraordinary for deep shadow in water and cliff face. Southern Ocean Blue is the uniquely Australian coastal colour: that particular cold grey-teal specific to southern Australian waters and overcast coastal skies. Ultramarine Blue is warmer, with a violet bias: use it for harbour water at dusk, for the warm purple in deep wave faces, for sky passages with warmth and depth. Together they cover the full spectrum of Australian marine colour.

Mixing Within the Set
What these colours do together:

Prussian Blue + Brilliant Alizarin deep ocean dark, storm water, complex near-black

Phthalo Blue + Phthalo Green vivid tropical shallows, coral reef water

Naples Yellow Light + Yellow Oxide golden beach sand, warm sunset sky, sea foam in late light

Ultramarine Blue + Brilliant Alizarin deep violet in wave shadow, dramatic sunset cloud

Why Matisse Structure is in Serious Australian Studios

  • Made in Australia, for Australian conditions. Derivan formulates for our coastal light and humidity. Not adapted from a Northern Hemisphere formula.
  • Structure formula for expressive seascape texture. Build impasto wave crests, foam ridges, and rocky shore texture with palette knife marks that stay put.
  • Consistent from batch to batch. Your palette does not shift between orders. Same colour, same consistency every time.
  • Works with the full Matisse medium range. MM1 through MM7, all Derivan gels and pastes. The system is designed to work together.

About Matisse: Made in Australia Since the 1960s

Matisse is made by Derivan at their Chipping Norton, Sydney factory. Derivan is Australia's largest art material manufacturer, producing professional acrylic paint since the 1960s. The Matisse Structure formula is purpose-built for expressive, textured work. Palette knife seascape painting in particular benefits from paint that holds peaks and dries without slumping.

What colours are in the Matisse Structure Seascape Colours Set?

The set contains eight 75ml tubes of Matisse Structure heavy body acrylic: Brilliant Alizarin, Phthalo Blue, Prussian Blue, Yellow Oxide, Phthalo Green, Southern Ocean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, and Naples Yellow Light. It also includes MM2 Impasto Medium and MM4 Gel Medium, both 75ml. Ten items total, all the same size. Note: Titanium White is not included. Add a tube separately for foam, breaking waves, and sky lightening.

Why does the Seascape Set include four different blues?

Each blue has a distinct character. Phthalo Blue is cold and vivid, ideal for intense tropical water and deep ocean. Prussian Blue is darker with a green undertone, perfect for storm water, deep shadow, and near-black ocean darks when mixed with Brilliant Alizarin. Southern Ocean Blue captures the distinctive cold grey-teal of southern Australian coastal water. Ultramarine Blue is warmer with a violet bias, best for harbour at dusk, warm sky, and deep wave shadows. No single blue does all of this. For serious seascape painting, having all four gives you the full range of Australian marine colour.

Is Titanium White included in the Seascape Set?

No. Titanium White is not included in the Matisse Structure Seascape Colours Set. For painting foam, breaking waves, bright sky, and surf highlights, we strongly recommend adding a 75ml tube of Matisse Structure Titanium White separately. Naples Yellow Light can provide warm, light mixing for golden tones, but true white brightness for foam and surf requires Titanium White.

Is Matisse Structure suitable for palette knife seascape painting?

Yes, and it excels at it. The Structure formula has a firm, buttery consistency designed for impasto and palette knife work. Wave crests, foam ridges, breaking water, and rocky shore texture all benefit from paint that holds its peak and mark as it dries without slumping. Mixed with MM2 Impasto Medium you can extend volume further for large textural passages without losing body. Matisse Structure is one of the most widely used paints by Australian seascape artists for exactly this reason.

Is Matisse Structure paint made in Australia?

Yes. Matisse is made by Derivan at their factory in Chipping Norton, Sydney, NSW. Derivan is Australia's largest art material manufacturer and has been producing professional-grade acrylic paint since the 1960s. The Matisse Structure formula is developed and manufactured entirely in Australia. Buying Matisse directly supports over 60 years of Australian art manufacturing.
