The colours in this set have been assembled to work. Titanium White is included as a primary colour, not an afterthought: you need it to mix sky, to lighten without washing out, to push warm colours into golden afternoon territory. Phthalo Blue is the sky engine, but it is also the depth in shadow when mixed with Burnt Umber. Hooker's Green and Australian Olive Green together give you the full range of Australian eucalyptus tone, from the cool grey-green of mature leaves to the warm khaki of dry summer scrub. Yellow Oxide and Australian Sienna carry the warm earth: sandstone, golden grass, late light on red soil.
Why Matisse Structure is in Serious Australian Studios

- Works with the full Matisse medium range. MM1 through MM7, all Derivan gels and pastes. The system is designed to work together.
About Matisse: Made in Australia Since the 1960s
Matisse is made by Derivan at their Chipping Norton, Sydney factory. Derivan is Australia's largest art material manufacturer, producing professional acrylic paint since the 1960s. The Matisse Structure formula was developed specifically for artists who work with palette knives, impasto techniques, and textured grounds. It is purpose-built for expressive, textured landscape work.
What colours are in the Matisse Structure Landscape Colours Set?
The set contains eight 75ml tubes of Matisse Structure heavy body acrylic: Australian Olive Green, Australian Sienna, Burnt Umber, Hooker's Green, Phthalo Blue, Red Oxide, Titanium White, and Yellow Oxide. It also includes MM2 Impasto Medium and MM4 Gel Medium, both 75ml. Ten items total, all the same size.
How does the Landscape Set differ from the Australian Colours Set?
The Landscape Set is built around the core mixing colours needed for Australian terrain: Titanium White for mixing highlights and sky, Phthalo Blue for vivid sky and deep shadow, Burnt Umber for dark tree and earth tones, Hooker's Green for deeper foliage, and Yellow Oxide for golden light and warm earth. The Australian Colours Set focuses on uniquely Australian colour names (Southern Ocean Blue, Australian Red Violet, Australian Yellow Green) and does not include Titanium White. The Landscape Set is the more versatile mixing palette; the Australian Colours Set is the more distinctive, landscape-specific palette.
Is Matisse Structure suitable for plein air landscape painting?
Yes. Matisse Structure's firm consistency means paint stays workable on the palette and does not spread or bleed when conditions are warm. The 75ml tubes are a practical size for outdoor work. The Structure formula dries to a flexible, permanent film without cracking, which matters for work transported in the field before it is fully cured. The set has been assembled with plein air use in mind: earth colours, foliage greens, a strong blue, white, and two mediums to modify consistency on site.
Why is Phthalo Blue included instead of a softer blue?
Phthalo Blue is one of the most versatile blues in a landscape palette despite its intensity. Mixed with Titanium White it gives a clean, bright sky blue. Mixed with Burnt Umber it produces a naturalistic near-black for deep shadow. Mixed with the greens it pushes them toward cooler, more atmospheric tones. A softer blue like Ultramarine cannot match its range. Phthalo Blue does need to be used carefully in small amounts, but that control is exactly what makes it so useful for Australian sky and shadow work.
