A beech attachment that clamps to your Mabef easel mast and carries the canvas on a 360 degree rotating holder. Takes canvases to 134cm and 10kg.

Watch anyone working on a detailed painting and you will see the same choreography. Lean left. Bend at the waist. Hold the brush at an angle the hand was not designed for, because the bit that needs work is in the bottom right corner and the painting is not going to move.

The Mabef MA40 makes the painting move. It clamps onto the mast of your Mabef easel and carries the canvas on its own rotating holder, so the whole work turns through 360 degrees and locks wherever you want it. Whatever you are working on comes to meet your hand.

It takes canvases up to 134cm and 10kg, and because it is an attachment rather than an easel, it moves between Mabef easels as your studio changes.

Turn the canvas upside down for two minutes before you call a painting finished. Your eye learns a composition and then stops seeing it, which is why a mistake you have looked past fifty times leaps out in a photograph or a mirror. Rotating the work does the same job instantly and for free. It is the most useful habit this accessory makes easy.

This is the one accessory in the Mabef range where the fit list genuinely matters. It suits all Mabef Studio and Lyre easels except the M/33, M/08, M/30 and M/25. If you own one of those four, or an easel from another brand, it will not fit and we would rather you knew now than after it arrives. If you are not sure what you own, send us a photo and we will tell you.

Mabef, and why we carry so much of it

Which Mabef easels does it fit?

Mabef state it fits all their Studio and Lyre easels except the M/33, M/08, M/30 and M/25. Of the Mabef easels we stock, that means it fits the M02, M04, M06, M07, M09, M10, M18, M19 and M48 studio easels, and the M11, M12, M13 and M20 lyre easels. It does not fit the M25 or the M30.

Will it fit a non Mabef easel?

No, and we would rather say so before you order. It clamps to a Mabef mast and it is designed around Mabef dimensions. If you have another brand of easel, this is not the accessory for you.

What does it actually do for a painter?

It lets you turn the painting instead of turning yourself. Rotate a corner down to where your hand naturally sits rather than reaching up and across for it. Spin the whole thing upside down for a minute to see the composition fresh, which is the oldest trick there is for catching what your eye has stopped noticing. Drag a long wet stroke downhill with gravity rather than sideways against it. Turn a detail area into the light.

Who gets the most out of one?

Portrait, botanical and fine detail painters, overwhelmingly, because those are the people making small controlled marks in awkward corners. It is also genuinely valuable for anyone painting with a shoulder, neck or back limitation, since it brings the work to you instead of the other way around.

How does it attach?

Two clamps fix it to the easel mast. You can tighten it so it rides up and down with the mast, or loosen it so it slides along the mast independently. It comes off again, so it can move to another Mabef easel later.
