How to Use Your Kent Urban Paint Marker

  1. Shake it. Cap on, shake well until the mixing ball rattles freely.
  2. Prime the nib. On scrap paper, press the tip down gently a few times until the paint flows. Gentle is the word.
  3. Test first. Do a quick line on scrap, or on a hidden spot of the surface, to check the flow and colour.
  4. Draw with light pressure. Let the nib glide. Build colour in layers rather than pressing harder.
  5. Let it dry, then layer. Water based acrylic dries fast. Wait until it is touch dry before going over it with another colour.
  6. Store flat. Click the cap on firmly and store the marker flat.

Getting the Most From a Super Fine Nib

A 1mm nib rewards a light hand. Hold the marker a little more upright than a pen, let the paint do the work and build colour in a couple of thin passes instead of pressing hard. Pressing pushes the nib back and floods the line.

Work from light to dark and broad to fine: paint or block in your colours first, let them dry, then finish with fine outlines and details. Keep a scrap of paper beside you to dab the nib on when you pick it up after a break.

Project idea: draw a robot or mech character on black card with 1mm Silver linework, then add a few Fluoro or Turquoise lights once it is dry.

Want the same colour in a broader nib? Grab the 3mm Metallic Silver or 6mm Metallic Silver. See every colour in the Kent Urban 1mm Super Fine paint markers, or browse the full Kent Urban acrylic paint marker range.

Questions About the Kent Urban 1mm Metallic Silver

What does the Kent Urban Metallic Silver look like on white paper?

On white it reads as a soft grey with a sheen. The shine really shows on dark, coloured and kraft papers, and on black surfaces it looks properly metallic. Give it an extra long shake first, as the metallic pigment settles.

How do I start a new Kent Urban paint marker?

Shake it well with the cap on until you hear the mixing ball rattle. Take the cap off, hold the marker nib down on a scrap of paper and press the tip gently a few times until the paint flows into the nib. Do not pump it hard or it can flood. Shake again before each use.

Can I use Kent Urban paint markers outdoors?

Yes. The ink is UV resistant and waterproof once dry, and Kent rates the range for indoor and outdoor use. For anything that lives outside, like a painted deck, a helmet or a piece on a legal wall, a clear outdoor varnish over the top keeps it looking fresh for longer.

Can I draw over acrylic paint with Kent Urban markers?

Yes. Paint a background with acrylic, let it dry completely, then add your linework and details with the 1mm. Because the marker is also acrylic, the layers bond well. Let the marker dry before you varnish over it.

Can I use Kent Urban paint markers on sneakers?

Yes. Kent lists fabric among the surfaces the range works on, and the acrylic ink grips well on canvas sneakers. Clean the area first, build the colour in light layers, let each layer dry fully, and finish with a clear sealer so your design survives scuffs and wear.

Why is my 1mm paint marker blotchy or flooding?

Usually it has been pumped too hard or not shaken enough. Give it a good shake with the cap on, then dab the tip on scrap paper to soak up any extra paint. Use light, even pressure when you draw. A fine nib needs a gentle touch.

How should I store Kent Urban paint markers?

Store them flat with the caps clicked on firmly. Flat storage keeps the paint evenly spread so the marker is ready to go next time, and a tight cap stops the fine nib drying out.

Where can I buy Kent Urban paint markers in Australia?

Right here. Art Shed Online is an authorised Australian stockist of Kent Urban, buying through the official Australian distributor, so you get genuine stock, never a grey import. We ship fast Australia wide, and our team are artists who use these products themselves, so ask us anything. Kent Urban Metallic Silver also comes in the 3mm and 6mm sizes, all in stock here.
