There are reds, and then there is this. Quinacridone Crimson (S7) is one of those colours that does things no other red can. A deep, jewel-like crimson with a cool blue lean — rich, complex, and devastatingly useful. It glazes like stained glass, mixes into purples and dark reds that hold their intensity, and even in thin washes it has a luminosity that heavier, opaque reds simply cannot touch. If you paint and you do not have a quinacridone crimson on your palette, you have been making do without something important.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
The semi-transparency is the point. Use it full strength for deep, saturated darks, or dilute and glaze for a crimson glow over warm underlayers. It also mixes exceptional purples — combine with Ultramarine Blue and you get a range from soft violet all the way to a near-black that still reads as purple in raking light. Pairs beautifully with Quinacridone Magenta and Quinacridone Violet if you are building a full transparent red family.

What Makes This Colour Special

Pigment
2-Pigment Formula
PR202 + PR206 — two quinacridone pigments working together for a depth and warmth no single pigment achieves alone.
Opacity
Semi-Transparent
Glows in thin layers. Builds to a rich, saturated depth when applied heavily or in multiple glazes.
Lightfastness
ASTM I — Excellent
The highest lightfastness rating available. Quinacridone pigments are among the most permanent reds in existence.
Formula
Zero Fillers or Extenders
Pure pigment in 100% acrylic emulsion. No hidden additives. The full ingredient list, nothing else.

Quinacridone Crimson is formulated with two complementary quinacridone pigments — PR202 and PR206. This pairing is deliberate: it creates a colour with more complexity and warmth in tints and glazes than either pigment gives alone. It sits between a cool red and a warm crimson, making it exceptional as both a standalone colour and a mixing partner.

The semi-transparency means this colour rewards technique. Applied thickly it gives intense, dark crimson. Applied as a glaze it glows. Tinted with white it produces cool, desaturated roses and dusty mauves. Mixed with blue it builds an exceptional range of purples with a luminosity that pre-mixed purples rarely match.

Lightfastness is rated ASTM I — Excellent. Quinacridone pigments are some of the most permanent reds ever developed. This is a red you can use in work you intend to sell without hesitation.

About Series Pricing

GOLDEN uses a Series 1 through 9 pricing system based purely on pigment cost and rarity. Series 1 uses the most accessible pigments. Series 9 uses the expensive, rare ones. What it does not mean is that Series 1 is lesser quality than Series 9. Every single series is made to exactly the same uncompromising standard. Quinacridone Crimson is a Series 7 colour, priced at $39.95 per 59ml tube.

Getting the Most Out of This Tube

Quinacridone Crimson rewards thin application as much as thick. Try it as a pure glaze over a dried warm yellow underpainting for a glowing red-orange. Or layer multiple thin coats to build up saturated depth without muddying.

Thin with water up to around 25% for smoother applications. Beyond that, reach for GOLDEN Fluid Medium or Glazing Liquid — heavy dilution with water alone can compromise the binder over time.

Need more working time? GOLDEN OPEN Medium or a touch of Retarder slows drying significantly — particularly useful for blending this colour into skin tones or smooth gradient work.

Questions About GOLDEN Quinacridone Crimson

Is GOLDEN Quinacridone Crimson a professional-grade acrylic?

Yes, full stop. No student grade, no hidden shortcuts. GOLDEN Heavy Body is pure pigment in 100% acrylic emulsion with no fillers or extenders of any kind. Every batch is tested for colour consistency and every claim on the label is backed by real data.

What pigments are used in GOLDEN Quinacridone Crimson?

Quinacridone Crimson uses two quinacridone pigments — PR202 and PR206. This combination produces a depth and warmth in tints and glazes that neither pigment achieves alone. Both are among the most lightfast reds available, rated ASTM I Excellent.

Is GOLDEN Quinacridone Crimson transparent or opaque?

Quinacridone Crimson is semi-transparent. It glows beautifully in glazes and thin washes, and builds to a deep, saturated crimson with multiple layers or heavier application. It will not fully cover a dark ground the way an opaque colour does — but that is exactly what makes it so valuable for luminous layered work.

What is the difference between Quinacridone Crimson and Quinacridone Red?

Quinacridone Red (GLD1310-2) is a brighter, slightly warmer and more orange-leaning transparent red made from PV19. Quinacridone Crimson sits deeper and cooler — more blue-leaning, darker in mass tone. Crimson is better suited to mixing purples and dark reds; Quinacridone Red is better for vivid, warm reds and oranges. Many serious painters keep both.

Can I use GOLDEN Quinacridone Crimson with other brands of acrylic paint?

Yes. GOLDEN Heavy Body is compatible with other professional acrylic paints. The binder chemistry works with standard acrylic formulations. Just be mindful of consistency differences — if mixing brands, mediums can help align working properties.
