30 colours
Neocolor II water soluble wax pastels in a metal tin
Swiss made in Geneva. Use wet or dry.

The Tin of 30 is for people who have stopped dabbling. Thirty Neocolor II colours means real choice: warm and cool versions, proper earths, greys for shadows, and enough brights to make a page sing. Use them dry like a pastel, wet like a watercolour, or both at once, and you have a whole mixed media studio in one flat tin.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Make a swatch card on day one. Draw a stripe of each colour, then wet half of every stripe. You will see exactly how each colour behaves dry and wet, and you will reach for the right stick every time.

The Caran d'Ache Difference: Swiss Made Since 1915

Here is the thing about Caran d'Ache. They have been making drawing tools in Geneva for more than a century, and they still do it the slow way, in their own Swiss workshops at Thônex just outside the city. Not outsourced, not rebadged, not made wherever is cheapest this year. When the tin says Swiss Made, it means the pigment, the wax and the stick were all made by people who have been perfecting this exact thing for generations.

It is still a family company too. The Hübscher family has been at the helm since the 1930s, and today Carole Hübscher leads as the fourth generation. That is why the quality does not wobble from one batch to the next. A Neocolor II stick you buy today behaves exactly like the one your art teacher handed you years ago.

Caran d'Ache also has form for inventing the things the rest of the art world copies. They launched Prismalo in 1931, the world's first watercolour pencil, and turned their Neocolor wax pastel water soluble in 1972. Neocolor II is the original, which is why so many imitations get compared to it and so few come close. We have stocked Caran d'Ache at Art Shed Brisbane for years, and it is one of those brands our team actually buys for themselves.

A Century of Colour in Geneva
1915 Founded in Geneva as a pencil factory.
1924 Renamed Caran d'Ache, after the Russian word for pencil, karandash.
1931 Launches Prismalo, the world's first watercolour pencil.
1952 Neocolor wax pastels are born.
1972 Neocolor II arrives, the water soluble version that artists still swear by.
Today Still family owned, still made in its own Geneva workshops.

Why Artists Keep Coming Back to Neocolor II

  • Two mediums in one stick. A bold, creamy pastel when dry and a luminous watercolour the moment water touches it. Fewer tools to carry, more ways to work.
  • No dust, no mess. Wax based, so nothing to breathe in, nothing to fix, nothing smudging across your desk.
  • Works on almost anything. Paper, cardboard, wood, glass, fabric, leather and stone. Journals, rocks, windows, mixed media.
  • Pigment that pulls its weight. High pigment content means real covering power, so light colours sit over dark and washes stay bright.
  • The original water soluble wax pastel. Neocolor II has been on art school kit lists since 1972. Everything else is the copy.
  • Made to last. Excellent lightfastness and a stick tough enough to survive a school pencil case, so your work and your tin both go the distance.

Getting the Most Out of the Tin of 30

Use warm and cool versions side by side. Warm colours forward, cool colours back. Brush water through to soften distances and keep foreground marks dry and textured.

Try sgraffito: lay a light colour, cover with a dark one, and scratch a design back through with a skewer. The thick wax makes it crisp.

Wet work wants a watercolour paper of 300gsm or more, and a water brush from our aqua brush range keeps it all tidy.

Questions About the Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Tin of 30

Who is the Neocolor II Tin of 30 for?

It suits art students, illustrators, journallers and mixed media artists who want a full working palette without the size of the 84. Warm and cool versions of the key colours, plus earths and greys, cover almost any subject.

How do you use Neocolor II with water?

Three ways. Draw dry then brush over with water to melt it into a wash. Dip the stick in water and draw for intense, juicy lines. Or rub a wet brush on the tip and paint straight from the stick like a pan of watercolour. A Caran d'Ache water brush makes all three easy on the go.

What is sgraffito with Neocolor II?

Lay down a light colour, cover it with a dark one, then scratch through the top layer with a skewer or palette knife to reveal the colour underneath. Neocolor II's thick, waxy layer is perfect for it, and kids go wild for it.

What paper should I use with Neocolor II?

For wet techniques use a watercolour paper of 300gsm or heavier so it does not buckle when you brush water over the colour. For dry drawing almost anything works: cartridge, kraft, coloured pastel paper, even cardboard. Browse our watercolour paper and pads for the wet work.

Do I need to fix Neocolor II artwork?

Not usually. Once dry the wax layer stays put far better than soft pastel. Framing behind glass is the best protection. If you plan to scan or post a journal page, a light spray of workable fixative helps stop transfer between pages.

Why is Caran d'Ache considered such high quality?

Because they are still made the old fashioned way. Caran d'Ache has made drawing tools in its own Geneva workshops since 1915, is still family owned, and controls everything from pigment to finished stick. That consistency is why Neocolor II behaves the same in every tin, why the colours are so rich and why artists trust it for work they want to last.

Can I buy single Neocolor II colours to refill my tin?

Yes. Every Neocolor II colour is sold individually, so when you wear down your favourite white or black you can replace just that stick instead of buying a whole new set. Ask our team if you cannot find the colour you need online.

Where can I buy Caran d'Ache Neocolor II in Australia?

Right here. Art Shed Online is an authorised Australian stockist of Caran d'Ache, buying through the official Australian distributor, so you get genuine Swiss-made Neocolor II, never a grey import. We ship fast Australia wide, and our team are artists who use these pastels themselves, so ask us anything. The Tin of 30 is the Neocolor II set we see most often in art students' kits.
