Amsterdam Acrylic Paint 500ml Bottle - Yellowish Green
Our everyday low price
Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Yellowish Green (617) is a semi-opaque green acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from titanium white, phthalocyanine green and arylide yellow. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.
The short answer: The jar is the right call when you empty tubes fast: large canvases, classes, murals, pouring. It holds about 4.2 times a 120ml tube. For occasional accent work, buy the tube.

How Yellowish Green behaves
The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:
- PW6, titanium white: a dense, highly opaque white that lifts a colour towards a tint and kills transparency
- PG7, phthalocyanine green: an intense blue-green with very high tinting strength
- PY74, arylide yellow: a clean mid yellow that mixes bright greens and oranges without muddying
It is rated semi-opaque. It covers well but not completely. Two coats gives solid colour, one coat gives a veil that lets the ground show through.
Because titanium white is already in the mix, this sits in the tint range rather than at full chroma. More white will lighten it but will not make it cleaner. For a more saturated version, tint the pure pigment colour yourself instead.
Where Yellowish Green earns its place
Green is used in larger quantity than almost anything else in landscape work, and mixing the same green twice is the problem a premixed one solves.
- Large areas of foliage where consistency across sessions matters
- Knocking back a red, since green is its complement
- Mixing believable Australian greens, which almost always need an earth added
- Garden, bush and paddock work, which eats green
Mixing with it
This contains a phthalocyanine pigment, which has enormous tinting strength. Add it to a mix a fraction at a time, because a brush load too many will take the whole mix with it.
With three or more pigments already in the jar, this colour is doing some mixing for you. That makes it convenient and consistent, but it means mixes made from it go neutral faster than mixes made from single-pigment colours.
Why the 500ml jar
The honest test is how fast you empty a tube. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Yellowish Green is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.
Surfaces and drying
This will go straight onto almost any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Expect thin layers to be dry within half an hour. Heavy application takes considerably longer, and full cure takes days. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions
What colours mix well with Yellowish Green?
All Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, and Yellowish Green behaves predictably in mixes given it is semi-opaque. Start by mixing it with titanium white for tints and with a small amount of its complementary colour to knock back the intensity rather than reaching for black, which tends to deaden a mix. Keep a swatch card of your mixes with the ratios written on it, because you will want to repeat one later.
How lightfast is Amsterdam Yellowish Green?
Yellowish Green is rated +++ on Royal Talens' scale. Three pluses means the colour is rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions, two pluses at least 25 years. Museum conditions means indoors and out of direct sunlight. That rating is why work painted in Amsterdam Standard Series is safe to sell, provided the buyer is not hanging it in a north-facing window.
Do you stock Yellowish Green in other sizes?
The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.
Can professional artists use Amsterdam acrylics?
Yes. The question that matters for selling work is permanence, and Amsterdam Standard Series is rated ++ or +++ for lightfastness with a 100% acrylic resin binder that cures water resistant. Where professionals tend to reach for a higher grade is when they need maximum pigment strength in a small area, or very specific single-pigment mixing behaviour. For large canvases, underpainting, murals and blocking in, Standard Series is a sensible professional choice.
What if my paint arrives damaged?
Tell us within 7 business days of receiving it. Email customerservice@artshedonline.com.au with your order number and photos of the damage and the packaging, and our team will sort it out. Paint jars are packed to survive the trip, but couriers are couriers. Reporting it quickly with photos is what lets us make a claim and get a replacement moving.
How do I get smooth, flat colour with no brush marks?
Three things. Thin the paint slightly with a flow improver rather than water, so it levels instead of holding the mark. Use a soft synthetic brush or a foam roller rather than a stiff hog bristle. And build the colour in two or three thin coats rather than one thick one, letting each dry. Amsterdam's medium viscosity levels reasonably well on its own, which is why it suits flat graphic work better than a stiff heavy body paint does.
What surfaces can I use Amsterdam acrylic on?
Virtually any slightly porous surface: stretched canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and rendered walls. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry and render where many acrylics fail. Non-porous surfaces such as bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need an appropriate primer or adhesion promoter first, or the paint will lift.
Can acrylic paint go off or go mouldy?
It can, though it takes mistreatment. Signs are a sour smell, visible mould on the surface, lumps that will not redisperse, or paint that has separated with a watery layer on top that will not stir back in. Contamination from dirty brushes and palette scrapings is the usual cause, along with a lid that never sealed properly. A skin on the surface is normal, just lift it off rather than stirring it in.
Can acrylic paint be frozen or left in a hot car?
Neither, if you can avoid it. Freezing can break the acrylic emulsion so the paint separates into a grainy, curdled mess that will not stir back together. Sustained heat thickens it, can partially cure it in the jar, and shortens its life considerably. An Australian car in summer gets well past the point where this matters within an hour. If a delivery has been sitting in heat, open it, check the consistency and tell us if it has been affected.
