Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Permanent Green Deep (619) is a semi-opaque green acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from phthalocyanine green and arylide yellow. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.

The short answer: This size is for volume work. One jar is about 4.2 times a 120ml tube, and the wide mouth takes a palette knife. If you use this colour now and then, the tube is the better fit.

How Permanent Green Deep behaves

The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:

  • PG7, phthalocyanine green: an intense blue-green with very high tinting strength
  • PY74, arylide yellow: a clean mid yellow that mixes bright greens and oranges without muddying

It is rated semi-opaque. It covers well but not completely. Two coats gives solid colour, one coat gives a veil that lets the ground show through.

Where Permanent Green Deep earns its place

Australian landscape is harder on greens than European landscape, because the light is flatter and the foliage is greyer.

  • Large areas of foliage where consistency across sessions matters
  • Knocking back a red, since green is its complement
  • Mixing believable Australian greens, which almost always need an earth added
  • Garden, bush and paddock work, which eats green

Mixing with it

This contains a phthalocyanine pigment, which has enormous tinting strength. Add it to a mix a fraction at a time, because a brush load too many will take the whole mix with it.

Why the 500ml jar

It depends entirely on your working scale. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Permanent Green Deep is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.

Surfaces and drying

The Standard Series binder holds on virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Drying is quick, within half an hour for a thin layer, and the cured film is water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions

Do you stock Permanent Green Deep in other sizes?

The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.

What pigments are in Amsterdam Permanent Green Deep?

Permanent Green Deep (colour number 619) uses PG7/PY74. It is rated semi-opaque with a lightfastness of +++. Knowing the pigment code matters more than the colour name, because names vary between brands while pigment index codes do not. If you are matching a colour across brands or checking permanence, the code is the thing to compare.

Is Permanent Green Deep opaque or transparent?

Permanent Green Deep is semi-opaque. That determines how you should use it. An opaque colour covers what is beneath it in one or two coats and is what you want for blocking in and correcting. A semi-transparent or transparent colour lets the layer underneath influence the result, which makes it ideal for glazing and shadow work but frustrating if you are trying to cover something. Check the swatch on the jar against a black bar to see it for yourself.

Is Amsterdam a good acrylic paint?

Yes. Amsterdam is made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands, a company that has been making artists' colours since 1899. The Standard Series is a general purpose acrylic built for people who paint a lot, with a 100% acrylic resin binder, a satin finish and lightfastness ratings of ++ or +++ across the range. It is not a heavily pigmented professional colour like Golden Heavy Body, and it is not trying to be. What it is, is a dependable, permanent acrylic you can use freely rather than ration.

Do you deliver art supplies to Perth, Darwin and regional Australia?

Yes, we ship Australia wide including WA, the Northern Territory, regional and remote areas. Allow about 2 to 3 business days with Express Post and 6 to 8 business days with Standard Post to those destinations after dispatch. Larger and heavier orders go by Startrack courier rather than Australia Post, which takes about 6 to 8 business days to WA, the NT, Tasmania and remote areas. Tracking is provided on everything.

How do I thin Amsterdam acrylic paint?

Water works for light thinning, up to roughly 25% by volume. Past that you start diluting the acrylic binder itself, and the paint loses adhesion, becomes chalky and can lift when you paint over it. For anything thinner than a light wash, use an acrylic medium or a flow improver instead, which thins the consistency without weakening the film. For glazing, use a glazing medium rather than water, every time.

Can I use acrylic paint on fabric or clothing?

Yes, with a fabric medium mixed in. Straight acrylic on fabric dries into a stiff plastic patch that cracks when the cloth flexes. A textile or fabric medium keeps the binder flexible so the paint moves with the weave. Prewash the fabric to remove sizing, paint with a board inside so it does not bleed through, let it cure fully, then heat set with an iron on the reverse per the medium's instructions.

Does acrylic paint smell?

Barely. Amsterdam is water based and Royal Talens describes it as odourless, which is the main reason acrylic suits home studios, apartments and classrooms where solvent-based oils are impractical. There is no turpentine or mineral spirit involved in painting or cleaning up. Some mediums and varnishes, particularly solvent-based varnishes, do have a smell, so read the label on those and use them with ventilation.

Is Amsterdam Standard Series the same as Amsterdam Expert Series?

No. Standard Series runs around 90 colours at one consistent grade, medium viscosity, satin finish. Expert Series uses higher pigment concentrations, more single-pigment colours and traditional artist pigments including cadmiums and cobalts, organised into series bands by pigment. Choose Standard for scale, teaching and mixing in volume. Choose Expert when you want maximum tinting strength and the cleanest possible mixes.
