Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Naples Yellow Red Light (292) is an opaque warm neutral acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from titanium white, yellow iron oxide and red iron oxide. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.

The short answer: Buy the 500ml jar if you paint large, mix custom colours, teach, or run a mural or prop job. One jar holds about 4.2 times a 120ml tube. Buy the tube if this is an accent colour.

How Naples Yellow Red Light behaves

The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:

  • PW6, titanium white: a dense, highly opaque white that lifts a colour towards a tint and kills transparency
  • PY42, yellow iron oxide: an earth pigment, muted and opaque, the reason a colour reads as chalky rather than acid
  • PR101, red iron oxide: an earth pigment, opaque and slightly dulling, which is what makes an ochre an ochre

It is rated opaque. It covers what is underneath in one or two coats, so it is a colour you block in with, correct with, and build on.

Because titanium white is already in the mix, this sits in the tint range rather than at full chroma. More white will lighten it but will not make it cleaner. For a more saturated version, tint the pure pigment colour yourself instead.

Where Naples Yellow Red Light earns its place

Warm neutrals are the workhorses of representational painting, and they are used in far greater quantity than the showy colours.

  • Skin tones, where a warm neutral is the base rather than a mix of red and white
  • Sandstone, brick, timber and dry Australian landscape
  • Warming a cool passage without shifting its hue
  • Grounds that flatter everything painted over them

Mixing with it

The earth and mineral pigments in this colour are what keep it civilised. They mute a mix rather than dominating it, so this is a safe colour to knock a loud one back with.

With three or more pigments already in the jar, this colour is doing some mixing for you. That makes it convenient and consistent, but it means mixes made from it go neutral faster than mixes made from single-pigment colours.

Why the 500ml jar

This comes down to how much paint you actually move. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Naples Yellow Red Light is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.

Surfaces and drying

Amsterdam Standard Series grips virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Thin layers can dry within half an hour, longer in heavy application, and it cures water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions

What colours mix well with Naples Yellow Red Light?

All Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, and Naples Yellow Red Light behaves predictably in mixes given it is opaque. Start by mixing it with titanium white for tints and with a small amount of its complementary colour to knock back the intensity rather than reaching for black, which tends to deaden a mix. Keep a swatch card of your mixes with the ratios written on it, because you will want to repeat one later.

How lightfast is Amsterdam Naples Yellow Red Light?

Naples Yellow Red Light is rated +++ on Royal Talens' scale. Three pluses means the colour is rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions, two pluses at least 25 years. Museum conditions means indoors and out of direct sunlight. That rating is why work painted in Amsterdam Standard Series is safe to sell, provided the buyer is not hanging it in a north-facing window.

Do you stock Naples Yellow Red Light in other sizes?

The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.

Is Amsterdam acrylic paint vegan and not tested on animals?

Royal Talens states that Amsterdam acrylics contain no animal-derived ingredients and are not tested on animals. Pigments and binders are synthetic or mineral. If this matters for a specific colour or for a school or institutional purchase, ask us and we will get the current safety data sheet and manufacturer statement for that exact product code rather than giving you a general answer.

Where can I buy Amsterdam acrylics near me?

If you are in Melbourne, our Moorabbin store carries the Amsterdam range on the shelf, and you can use Click and Collect to reserve online and pick up, usually ready in 1 to 3 business days. If you are in Brisbane, our West End store stocks it too. Everywhere else in Australia, we ship direct from our warehouses with tracking on every order, and Express Post reaches most metro areas in 1 to 2 business days after dispatch.

Can I mix Amsterdam with other brands of acrylic paint?

Yes. All artist acrylics share the same acrylic resin chemistry, so Amsterdam mixes freely with Liquitex, Golden, Matisse, Atelier and any other acrylic, and with acrylic mediums and gesso. What will differ between brands is viscosity and pigment load, so a stiff heavy body colour mixed into Amsterdam will thicken the mix, and a very high-pigment colour will dominate a mix faster than you expect. Mix a test swatch before you commit a large batch.

Is Amsterdam acrylic suitable for sets, props and model making?

Very. The 500ml and 1 litre sizes and the medium viscosity are both suited to covering area fast. It takes to MDF, plywood, cardboard, foam that has been sealed first, plaster and most primed surfaces, dries fast enough to recoat the same day, and the metallic and reflex fluorescent colours in the range cover effects that would otherwise need spray.

Is acrylic paint safe for children and classrooms?

Amsterdam Standard Series is water based, odourless and cleans up with soap and water, which is why it is widely used in Australian schools and community workshops. It is still an artists' material rather than a toy paint, so normal classroom practice applies: check the label and safety data sheet for the specific colour, supervise young children, keep it away from mouths, and ventilate as you would for any art activity. We can supply safety data sheets for any product on request.

How do I clean acrylic paint out of brushes?

Soap and water, before it dries. Rinse the brush out as soon as you put it down, work lukewarm water and a brush soap into the ferrule where paint hides, and reshape the head before you leave it to dry lying flat or bristles down. Once acrylic cures in a brush, it is a polymer film and no solvent will remove it without wrecking the bristles. The brush you ruin is always the one you left standing in the water jar.
