Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Naples Yellow Green (282) is an opaque yellow-green acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from titanium white, yellow iron oxide and phthalocyanine green. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.

The short answer: This size is for volume work. One jar is about 4.2 times a 120ml tube, and the wide mouth takes a palette knife. If you use this colour now and then, the tube is the better fit.

How Naples Yellow Green behaves

The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:

  • PW6, titanium white: a dense, highly opaque white that lifts a colour towards a tint and kills transparency
  • PY42, yellow iron oxide: an earth pigment, muted and opaque, the reason a colour reads as chalky rather than acid
  • PG7, phthalocyanine green: an intense blue-green with very high tinting strength

It is rated opaque. It covers what is underneath in one or two coats, so it is a colour you block in with, correct with, and build on.

Because titanium white is already in the mix, this sits in the tint range rather than at full chroma. More white will lighten it but will not make it cleaner. For a more saturated version, tint the pure pigment colour yourself instead.

Where Naples Yellow Green earns its place

A yellow-green saves you the step of mixing one, and more importantly it saves the consistency problem of mixing the same green twice.

  • Foliage, where a premixed yellow-green stops every leaf being a slightly different colour
  • Spring and new growth, which straight phthalo green cannot do
  • Knocking a pure green back towards something believable
  • Landscape underpainting

Mixing with it

This contains a phthalocyanine pigment, which has enormous tinting strength. Add it to a mix a fraction at a time, because a brush load too many will take the whole mix with it.

The earth and mineral pigments in this colour are what keep it civilised. They mute a mix rather than dominating it, so this is a safe colour to knock a loud one back with.

With three or more pigments already in the jar, this colour is doing some mixing for you. That makes it convenient and consistent, but it means mixes made from it go neutral faster than mixes made from single-pigment colours.

Why the 500ml jar

It depends entirely on your working scale. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Naples Yellow Green is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.

Surfaces and drying

The Standard Series binder holds on virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Drying is quick, within half an hour for a thin layer, and the cured film is water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions

What colours mix well with Naples Yellow Green?

All Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, and Naples Yellow Green behaves predictably in mixes given it is opaque. Start by mixing it with titanium white for tints and with a small amount of its complementary colour to knock back the intensity rather than reaching for black, which tends to deaden a mix. Keep a swatch card of your mixes with the ratios written on it, because you will want to repeat one later.

How lightfast is Amsterdam Naples Yellow Green?

Naples Yellow Green is rated +++ on Royal Talens' scale. Three pluses means the colour is rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions, two pluses at least 25 years. Museum conditions means indoors and out of direct sunlight. That rating is why work painted in Amsterdam Standard Series is safe to sell, provided the buyer is not hanging it in a north-facing window.

Do you stock Naples Yellow Green in other sizes?

The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.

Is Amsterdam a good acrylic paint?

Yes. Amsterdam is made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands, a company that has been making artists' colours since 1899. The Standard Series is a general purpose acrylic built for people who paint a lot, with a 100% acrylic resin binder, a satin finish and lightfastness ratings of ++ or +++ across the range. It is not a heavily pigmented professional colour like Golden Heavy Body, and it is not trying to be. What it is, is a dependable, permanent acrylic you can use freely rather than ration.

Do you deliver art supplies to Perth, Darwin and regional Australia?

Yes, we ship Australia wide including WA, the Northern Territory, regional and remote areas. Allow about 2 to 3 business days with Express Post and 6 to 8 business days with Standard Post to those destinations after dispatch. Larger and heavier orders go by Startrack courier rather than Australia Post, which takes about 6 to 8 business days to WA, the NT, Tasmania and remote areas. Tracking is provided on everything.

Can I use acrylic paint for pouring?

Yes, mixed with a pouring medium. Do not try to thin acrylic to pouring consistency with water alone, because you will break the binder and get a weak, crazed film. A pouring medium keeps the resin content intact while dropping the viscosity, and a few drops of silicone oil will open cells if that is the look you want. The 500ml size is the sensible one for pouring, because a pour uses far more paint than you think it will.

Can I use acrylic paint on a wall in my house?

Yes, for feature walls, murals and children's rooms. Artist acrylic is far more pigmented than house paint, so it covers in fewer coats and goes further per litre than you would expect, which is why people usually use it for the artwork itself and standard wall paint for the surrounding field. Make sure the wall is clean and free of grease, and keep in mind that artist acrylic in a satin finish will not scrub like a washable interior paint unless you seal it.

How do I dispose of acrylic paint and rinse water?

Do not tip liquid acrylic or heavily pigmented rinse water down the sink or a storm drain. Let leftover paint dry out fully in the container, then put the solid in general waste. For rinse water, let the solids settle in a bucket, decant the clear water, and dry out the sludge before binning it. For larger quantities, or if you are unsure, check with your local council, which will have a household chemical drop-off.

Is Amsterdam Standard Series the same as Amsterdam Expert Series?

No. Standard Series runs around 90 colours at one consistent grade, medium viscosity, satin finish. Expert Series uses higher pigment concentrations, more single-pigment colours and traditional artist pigments including cadmiums and cobalts, organised into series bands by pigment. Choose Standard for scale, teaching and mixing in volume. Choose Expert when you want maximum tinting strength and the cleanest possible mixes.
