Amsterdam Acrylic Paint 500ml Bottle - Metallic Green
Our everyday low price
Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Metallic Green (836) is a mica-based metallic acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It combines coated mica with phthalocyanine green. It is semi-transparent, with a lightfastness of +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.
The short answer: This size is for volume work. One jar is about 4.2 times a 120ml tube, and the wide mouth takes a palette knife. If you use this colour now and then, the tube is the better fit.

How Metallic Green behaves
Most acrylics get their colour from pigment alone. This one gets it from coated mica, a mineral that splits into flat reflective platelets. Brush it out and those platelets lie down parallel to the surface, so the colour shifts as you move past it. Straight on you see the colour. At an angle it flares.
It is semi-transparent, which is the single most useful thing to know. The mica lets light through to whatever sits underneath and bounces it back, so the ground changes the result completely.
- Over black or a dark ground, the shimmer reads at full strength and the colour goes deep. This is the way to use it.
- Over white or raw canvas, it looks pale and chalky.
- Brushed one direction, the mica aligns and the sheen is even. Scrubbed every which way, it scatters and dulls.
- Thinned with water, the mica separates and the effect collapses. Use acrylic medium instead.
Where Metallic Green earns its place
Green is used in larger quantity than almost anything else in landscape work, and mixing the same green twice is the problem a premixed one solves.
- Botanical illustration, where the green range has to be built rather than bought
- Shadow greens, mixed with a violet rather than a black
- Murals and sets, which need a lot of green and need it to match
- Underpainting a portrait, an old trick for making flesh look alive
Mixing with it
This contains a phthalocyanine pigment, which has enormous tinting strength. Add it to a mix a fraction at a time, because a brush load too many will take the whole mix with it.
Why the 500ml jar
It depends entirely on your working scale. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Metallic Green is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.
Surfaces and drying
The Standard Series binder holds on virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Drying is quick, within half an hour for a thin layer, and the cured film is water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions
What colour should I paint under Metallic Green?
That depends on how much this one covers, and Metallic Green is semi-transparent. A metallic that lets light through is at the mercy of its ground: over black or a deep green underpainting it flares properly, and over white or raw canvas it goes pale and chalky. One that covers in its own right is far less fussy and will shimmer straight over a light surface, though a darker ground still deepens it. Either way, let the ground dry completely before laying the metallic over it in one or two even coats.
Can I mix Metallic Green with other colours?
Yes, all Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, but adding an opaque colour to a metallic buries the mica flakes in solid pigment and reduces the shimmer. If you want a metallic version of another colour, glaze a thin layer of Metallic Green over the opaque colour once it is dry rather than mixing the two on the palette. Mixing metallic into metallic works fine and is a good way to shift the tone.
Does varnish affect the metallic effect?
Yes, more than it affects a plain colour. Gloss varnish deepens the flare and makes Metallic Green look richer. Matte varnish scatters the reflected light and will noticeably mute the metallic, sometimes to the point of losing the effect. Satin sits in between. Always test on a painted sample board before varnishing the finished piece, because this is not a change you can undo.
Who makes Amsterdam acrylic paint?
Royal Talens, based in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. The company was founded in 1899 and also makes Rembrandt oils and pastels, Van Gogh oils and watercolours, Cobra water-mixable oils, Ecoline liquid watercolour and Bruynzeel pencils. Amsterdam acrylics are manufactured in the Netherlands, not contract-made offshore, which is part of why batch-to-batch consistency is reliable when you are mixing a colour you need to match again later.
Can I click and collect from your Melbourne store?
Yes, Click and Collect is available from our Moorabbin store, for Melbourne metro customers. Order online and the Click and Collect option appears as a delivery method once you enter your address. Allow 1 to 3 business days for your order to be picked and packed, and we will email you when it is ready. Orders need to be collected within 4 business days of that notification. Someone else can collect on your behalf if they have the order number.
Do I need to prime my canvas before using Amsterdam acrylic?
Pre-primed canvas from the shop is ready to paint on. Raw canvas, raw board and bare timber should be primed with acrylic gesso first, two thin coats sanded lightly between, which gives you a stable, slightly toothy surface and stops the binder sinking straight in. On masonry, render or concrete the surface needs to be clean, sound and slightly porous, and Amsterdam's alkali resistance means it will hold there without a specialist primer.
Can I use acrylic paint on fabric or clothing?
Yes, with a fabric medium mixed in. Straight acrylic on fabric dries into a stiff plastic patch that cracks when the cloth flexes. A textile or fabric medium keeps the binder flexible so the paint moves with the weave. Prewash the fabric to remove sizing, paint with a board inside so it does not bleed through, let it cure fully, then heat set with an iron on the reverse per the medium's instructions.
Does acrylic paint smell?
Barely. Amsterdam is water based and Royal Talens describes it as odourless, which is the main reason acrylic suits home studios, apartments and classrooms where solvent-based oils are impractical. There is no turpentine or mineral spirit involved in painting or cleaning up. Some mediums and varnishes, particularly solvent-based varnishes, do have a smell, so read the label on those and use them with ventilation.
Can I use Amsterdam acrylic for a mural?
Yes, it is a common mural choice, and the alkali resistance is the reason. It adheres to stone, plaster, concrete and render without a specialist masonry primer, provided the wall is clean, sound and slightly porous. For an exterior mural, finish with a UV resistant exterior varnish. The paint's lightfastness rating assumes indoor museum conditions, and an Australian north-facing wall is a very different ask.
