Amsterdam Acrylic Paint 500ml Bottle - Light Rose
Our everyday low price
Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Light Rose (361) is an opaque pink acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from quinacridone violet and titanium white. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.
The short answer: The jar is the right call when you empty tubes fast: large canvases, classes, murals, pouring. It holds about 4.2 times a 120ml tube. For occasional accent work, buy the tube.
Specifications at a glance
How Light Rose behaves
The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:
- PV19, quinacridone violet: a transparent rose to violet that glazes beautifully and tints with real clarity
- PW6, titanium white: a dense, highly opaque white that lifts a colour towards a tint and kills transparency
It is rated opaque. It covers what is underneath in one or two coats, so it is a colour you block in with, correct with, and build on.
Because titanium white is already in the mix, this sits in the tint range rather than at full chroma. More white will lighten it but will not make it cleaner. For a more saturated version, tint the pure pigment colour yourself instead.
Where Light Rose earns its place
Pinks are difficult to mix cleanly, because adding white to a red usually kills its clarity, so a premixed one is genuinely useful.
- Florals and botanical work
- Skin, where a clean pink beats red plus white
- Skies at dawn and dusk
- Contemporary and decorative work where the colour is the point
Mixing with it
Quinacridone stays clean as you tint it, so this colour will not go chalky when you add white the way an opaque red would.
Why the 500ml jar
The honest test is how fast you empty a tube. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Light Rose is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.
Surfaces and drying
This will go straight onto almost any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Expect thin layers to be dry within half an hour. Heavy application takes considerably longer, and full cure takes days. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions
Is Light Rose opaque or transparent?
Light Rose is opaque. That determines how you should use it. An opaque colour covers what is beneath it in one or two coats and is what you want for blocking in and correcting. A semi-transparent or transparent colour lets the layer underneath influence the result, which makes it ideal for glazing and shadow work but frustrating if you are trying to cover something. Check the swatch on the jar against a black bar to see it for yourself.
What colours mix well with Light Rose?
All Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, and Light Rose behaves predictably in mixes given it is opaque. Start by mixing it with titanium white for tints and with a small amount of its complementary colour to knock back the intensity rather than reaching for black, which tends to deaden a mix. Keep a swatch card of your mixes with the ratios written on it, because you will want to repeat one later.
How lightfast is Amsterdam Light Rose?
Light Rose is rated +++ on Royal Talens' scale. Three pluses means the colour is rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions, two pluses at least 25 years. Museum conditions means indoors and out of direct sunlight. That rating is why work painted in Amsterdam Standard Series is safe to sell, provided the buyer is not hanging it in a north-facing window.
Is Amsterdam acrylic paint vegan and not tested on animals?
Royal Talens states that Amsterdam acrylics contain no animal-derived ingredients and are not tested on animals. Pigments and binders are synthetic or mineral. If this matters for a specific colour or for a school or institutional purchase, ask us and we will get the current safety data sheet and manufacturer statement for that exact product code rather than giving you a general answer.
Where can I buy Amsterdam acrylics near me?
If you are in Melbourne, our Moorabbin store carries the Amsterdam range on the shelf, and you can use Click and Collect to reserve online and pick up, usually ready in 1 to 3 business days. If you are in Brisbane, our West End store stocks it too. Everywhere else in Australia, we ship direct from our warehouses with tracking on every order, and Express Post reaches most metro areas in 1 to 2 business days after dispatch.
How do I get smooth, flat colour with no brush marks?
Three things. Thin the paint slightly with a flow improver rather than water, so it levels instead of holding the mark. Use a soft synthetic brush or a foam roller rather than a stiff hog bristle. And build the colour in two or three thin coats rather than one thick one, letting each dry. Amsterdam's medium viscosity levels reasonably well on its own, which is why it suits flat graphic work better than a stiff heavy body paint does.
Can I use acrylic paint on terracotta pots?
Yes, and it holds well because terracotta is porous. Clean the pot, let it dry completely, then paint directly or over a coat of gesso if you want a brighter base. For pots that will live outside or be watered, seal the finished paint with an exterior-grade clear varnish and ideally seal the inside of the pot separately, because water wicking through unsealed terracotta from behind is what lifts the paint.
Can acrylic paint be frozen or left in a hot car?
Neither, if you can avoid it. Freezing can break the acrylic emulsion so the paint separates into a grainy, curdled mess that will not stir back together. Sustained heat thickens it, can partially cure it in the jar, and shortens its life considerably. An Australian car in summer gets well past the point where this matters within an hour. If a delivery has been sitting in heat, open it, check the consistency and tell us if it has been affected.
Can I blend acrylics like oils?
Not as freely, because acrylic sets fast, but you can get close with the right approach. Work wet into wet quickly and in small areas, keep a mister handy, and use an acrylic retarder or an open medium to extend the working time. The alternative approach, which often looks better, is to build the blend in thin glazes once each layer is dry, letting the transitions happen optically rather than physically.
