Amsterdam Acrylic Paint 500ml Bottle - Greenish Yellow
Our everyday low price
Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Greenish Yellow (243) is a semi-opaque yellow acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from arylide yellow and phthalocyanine green. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.
The short answer: Buy the 500ml jar if you paint large, mix custom colours, teach, or run a mural or prop job. One jar holds about 4.2 times a 120ml tube. Buy the tube if this is an accent colour.
Specifications at a glance
How Greenish Yellow behaves
The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:
- PY74, arylide yellow: a clean mid yellow that mixes bright greens and oranges without muddying
- PG7, phthalocyanine green: an intense blue-green with very high tinting strength
It is rated semi-opaque. It covers well but not completely. Two coats gives solid colour, one coat gives a veil that lets the ground show through.
Where Greenish Yellow earns its place
Yellow does the heaviest lifting of any colour on a palette and empties fastest, which is the usual reason people move up a size.
- Building an orange with a red, which is cleaner than any premixed orange
- Lifting a green that has gone too blue and flat
- Sunlit passages, where yellow does the work that white cannot
- Large grounds and underpainting, which is where a 500ml jar pays for itself
Mixing with it
This contains a phthalocyanine pigment, which has enormous tinting strength. Add it to a mix a fraction at a time, because a brush load too many will take the whole mix with it.
Why the 500ml jar
This comes down to how much paint you actually move. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Greenish Yellow is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.
Surfaces and drying
Amsterdam Standard Series grips virtually any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Thin layers can dry within half an hour, longer in heavy application, and it cures water resistant and permanent. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions
How lightfast is Amsterdam Greenish Yellow?
Greenish Yellow is rated +++ on Royal Talens' scale. Three pluses means the colour is rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions, two pluses at least 25 years. Museum conditions means indoors and out of direct sunlight. That rating is why work painted in Amsterdam Standard Series is safe to sell, provided the buyer is not hanging it in a north-facing window.
Do you stock Greenish Yellow in other sizes?
The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.
What pigments are in Amsterdam Greenish Yellow?
Greenish Yellow (colour number 243) uses PY74/PG7. It is rated semi-opaque with a lightfastness of +++. Knowing the pigment code matters more than the colour name, because names vary between brands while pigment index codes do not. If you are matching a colour across brands or checking permanence, the code is the thing to compare.
Can professional artists use Amsterdam acrylics?
Yes. The question that matters for selling work is permanence, and Amsterdam Standard Series is rated ++ or +++ for lightfastness with a 100% acrylic resin binder that cures water resistant. Where professionals tend to reach for a higher grade is when they need maximum pigment strength in a small area, or very specific single-pigment mixing behaviour. For large canvases, underpainting, murals and blocking in, Standard Series is a sensible professional choice.
What if my paint arrives damaged?
Tell us within 7 business days of receiving it. Email customerservice@artshedonline.com.au with your order number and photos of the damage and the packaging, and our team will sort it out. Paint jars are packed to survive the trip, but couriers are couriers. Reporting it quickly with photos is what lets us make a claim and get a replacement moving.
How do I stop acrylic paint drying on my palette?
Use a stay-wet palette, which is a shallow tray with a damp sponge under a sheet of palette paper, and close the lid between sessions. Failing that, mist the palette with a fine water spray every few minutes and work in smaller mixes. Do not scrape half-dry paint back into the jar, because those lumps will never redisperse and you will find them in a later layer. Acrylic retarder medium buys extra open time if you need it.
Is Amsterdam acrylic suitable for sets, props and model making?
Very. The 500ml and 1 litre sizes and the medium viscosity are both suited to covering area fast. It takes to MDF, plywood, cardboard, foam that has been sealed first, plaster and most primed surfaces, dries fast enough to recoat the same day, and the metallic and reflex fluorescent colours in the range cover effects that would otherwise need spray.
Is acrylic paint safe for children and classrooms?
Amsterdam Standard Series is water based, odourless and cleans up with soap and water, which is why it is widely used in Australian schools and community workshops. It is still an artists' material rather than a toy paint, so normal classroom practice applies: check the label and safety data sheet for the specific colour, supervise young children, keep it away from mouths, and ventilate as you would for any art activity. We can supply safety data sheets for any product on request.
Is acrylic paint waterproof once dry?
It cures water resistant and permanent, which is enough for an indoor painting and enough to survive being wiped. It is not the same as a waterproof coating, so for anything living outdoors, getting scrubbed, or holding water, seal it with an exterior or hard-wearing clear varnish. Note also that it needs to be fully cured, not just touch dry, before it reaches that water resistance, which means days rather than minutes.
