Amsterdam Acrylic Paint 500ml Bottle - Greyish Blue
Our everyday low price
Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic Paint 500ml Greyish Blue (562) is an opaque blue acrylic in a 500ml jar, made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands. It is made from titanium white, phthalocyanine blue and carbon black. Lightfastness is +++, rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions. Art Shed ships it Australia wide, with same day dispatch before 11am AEST on business days.
The short answer: The jar is the right call when you empty tubes fast: large canvases, classes, murals, pouring. It holds about 4.2 times a 120ml tube. For occasional accent work, buy the tube.
Specifications at a glance
How Greyish Blue behaves
The pigment mix tells you how it will behave:
- PW6, titanium white: a dense, highly opaque white that lifts a colour towards a tint and kills transparency
- PB15, phthalocyanine blue: an intense, staining blue with enormous tinting strength, easy to overdo in a mix
- PBk7, carbon black: a deep, neutral black that will flatten a mix quickly if you are heavy handed
It is rated opaque. It covers what is underneath in one or two coats, so it is a colour you block in with, correct with, and build on.
Because titanium white is already in the mix, this sits in the tint range rather than at full chroma. More white will lighten it but will not make it cleaner. For a more saturated version, tint the pure pigment colour yourself instead.
Where Greyish Blue earns its place
Landscape painters go through blue faster than any other colour, and skies are unforgiving about a mix that does not match.
- Seascapes and skies, painted wet and in volume
- Building a full range of greens from one blue and one yellow
- Night scenes and interiors, where blue is doing the value work
- Mixing a chromatic black with a burnt earth, which beats a tube black
Mixing with it
This contains a phthalocyanine pigment, which has enormous tinting strength. Add it to a mix a fraction at a time, because a brush load too many will take the whole mix with it.
With three or more pigments already in the jar, this colour is doing some mixing for you. That makes it convenient and consistent, but it means mixes made from it go neutral faster than mixes made from single-pigment colours.
Why the 500ml jar
The honest test is how fast you empty a tube. A 500ml jar holds about 4.2 times the paint of a 120ml tube, so it is the size for colours you genuinely empty rather than dip into. The wide mouth matters too: it takes a palette knife or a large brush straight in, which a tube nozzle will not, and it reseals properly between sessions. If Greyish Blue is an accent colour for you, buy the tube instead and see the full Amsterdam range for sizes.
Surfaces and drying
This will go straight onto almost any slightly porous surface: canvas, canvas board, acrylic and watercolour paper, cardboard, MDF, plywood, raw and primed timber, stone, terracotta, plaster, concrete and render. It is alkali resistant, which is why it holds on masonry where many acrylics fail. Bare metal, glass and glossy plastic need a primer first. Expect thin layers to be dry within half an hour. Heavy application takes considerably longer, and full cure takes days. Clean brushes with soap and water before it sets.

Frequently asked questions
What colours mix well with Greyish Blue?
All Amsterdam acrylics are intermixable, and Greyish Blue behaves predictably in mixes given it is opaque. Start by mixing it with titanium white for tints and with a small amount of its complementary colour to knock back the intensity rather than reaching for black, which tends to deaden a mix. Keep a swatch card of your mixes with the ratios written on it, because you will want to repeat one later.
How lightfast is Amsterdam Greyish Blue?
Greyish Blue is rated +++ on Royal Talens' scale. Three pluses means the colour is rated to last at least 100 years under museum conditions, two pluses at least 25 years. Museum conditions means indoors and out of direct sunlight. That rating is why work painted in Amsterdam Standard Series is safe to sell, provided the buyer is not hanging it in a north-facing window.
Do you stock Greyish Blue in other sizes?
The Amsterdam Standard Series runs in 20ml, 120ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre, though not every colour is made in every size. We carry the sizes that move, and the 500ml jar is the one to choose when you are painting large, teaching, mixing in volume or working on murals and props. If you want a size you cannot see on the site, ask us and we will check what Royal Talens produces in that colour.
Is Amsterdam a good acrylic paint?
Yes. Amsterdam is made by Royal Talens in the Netherlands, a company that has been making artists' colours since 1899. The Standard Series is a general purpose acrylic built for people who paint a lot, with a 100% acrylic resin binder, a satin finish and lightfastness ratings of ++ or +++ across the range. It is not a heavily pigmented professional colour like Golden Heavy Body, and it is not trying to be. What it is, is a dependable, permanent acrylic you can use freely rather than ration.
Do you deliver art supplies to Perth, Darwin and regional Australia?
Yes, we ship Australia wide including WA, the Northern Territory, regional and remote areas. Allow about 2 to 3 business days with Express Post and 6 to 8 business days with Standard Post to those destinations after dispatch. Larger and heavier orders go by Startrack courier rather than Australia Post, which takes about 6 to 8 business days to WA, the NT, Tasmania and remote areas. Tracking is provided on everything.
Can I paint acrylic over oil paint, or oil over acrylic?
Oil over acrylic is fine, and is a standard technique. Acrylic gesso and acrylic underpainting make a perfectly good ground for oils. Acrylic over oil is not fine. Acrylic is a water-based film and will not bond to an oily surface, so it will sit on top and eventually peel. The rule painters use is fat over lean: acrylic first, oil on top, never the other way around.
Can I use acrylic paint on terracotta pots?
Yes, and it holds well because terracotta is porous. Clean the pot, let it dry completely, then paint directly or over a coat of gesso if you want a brighter base. For pots that will live outside or be watered, seal the finished paint with an exterior-grade clear varnish and ideally seal the inside of the pot separately, because water wicking through unsealed terracotta from behind is what lifts the paint.
Can acrylic paint be frozen or left in a hot car?
Neither, if you can avoid it. Freezing can break the acrylic emulsion so the paint separates into a grainy, curdled mess that will not stir back together. Sustained heat thickens it, can partially cure it in the jar, and shortens its life considerably. An Australian car in summer gets well past the point where this matters within an hour. If a delivery has been sitting in heat, open it, check the consistency and tell us if it has been affected.
Is Amsterdam Standard Series the same as Amsterdam Expert Series?
No. Standard Series runs around 90 colours at one consistent grade, medium viscosity, satin finish. Expert Series uses higher pigment concentrations, more single-pigment colours and traditional artist pigments including cadmiums and cobalts, organised into series bands by pigment. Choose Standard for scale, teaching and mixing in volume. Choose Expert when you want maximum tinting strength and the cleanest possible mixes.
