Colour 622, opaque, +++ lightfast, waterproof when dry, 30ml dropper bottle

If every green you own looks like it came out of a highlighter, meet Amsterdam Acrylic Ink 30ml in Olive Green Deep by Royal Talens. It is a dark, earthy, grown up olive that looks like real leaves, real moss and real Australian bush, straight out of the bottle. No mixing, no muddy experiments, just the green you actually wanted.

★ Art Shed Staff Tip
Olive Green Deep is opaque, so it covers beautifully. Use that to your advantage: lay down a light wash first, let it dry, then come back in with neat Olive Green Deep for the shadowy leaves at the back of a bunch. Thin it with lots of water and it turns into a soft sage for distant hills.

Amsterdam Acrylic Ink is a water based acrylic ink that is odourless while you work and dries waterproof and permanent. Once your olive layer is dry, you can wash, glaze and draw over it with pen and ink and it stays put.

The lid has a dropper pipette built in, which makes measured mixing easy, and the wide neck lets you dip a brush or nib straight into the bottle.

About Olive Green Deep

Olive Green Deep is colour 622 in the Amsterdam Acrylic Ink range, made with PG7, PB15, PY83 and PBk7. That little touch of black is what gives it the natural, slightly shadowed depth that bright greens lack. It is opaque, so it holds its own on toned paper and over dried underlayers.

Royal Talens rates it +++ for lightfastness, which is 100 years or more under museum conditions, so it is safe for finished framed work as well as sketchbooks.

How to Use Amsterdam Acrylic Ink

  1. Shake it well. Give the bottle a good shake so the blended pigments are evenly mixed.
  2. Choose your strength. Use it neat for dense foliage and line work, or add water for soft sage washes.
  3. Layer light to dark. Start with thinned washes, let them dry, then build up the deep shadows.
  4. Add detail once dry. Because it dries waterproof, you can draw over it with pens or more ink.
  5. Clean up fast. Rinse brushes, nibs and airbrushes in water before the ink dries.

Getting the Most From Olive Green Deep

For landscapes, make a value scale before you start: one swatch neat, then add more water to each one after. You will end up with a full set of greens from deep shadow to misty distance, all from one bottle.

Pair it with a lighter, brighter green for sunlit leaves. Olive Green Light is the natural partner, and Emerald Green brings the zing. It also mixes with acrylic paints and mediums if you want to tint a heavier body paint.

Add earth tones with Burnt Umber, browse all acrylic inks, or shop the full Royal Talens range.
