Silicon, Latex, and Alginate
If you’re a beginner, you may be asking what silicon, latex, and alginate are, how they differ from each other, and what they can be used for. Here is an explanation of each that will hopefully make things clearer for you and help you on your creative journey.
Silicon: The silicone products we stock include Helmar H4000 Silicone Oil, Gedeo Siligum Silicone Moulding Paste, Gedeo Crystal Resin, Art Spectrum Pastel Shaper and Blender + 6 Changeable Heads, and an Art Spectrum Masking Fluid Applicator.
Silicone Oil is used to create cells in acrylic pouring and fluid art. Artists either drop the oil into paint before pouring it onto the surface, or they apply the paint to the surface and then drop the oil on over the top. Silicone Moulding Paste is great for moulding, whether models, jewellery findings, or ornaments, and has a rapid setting time.
Crystal resin is very easy to use and is great for castings, inclusions, jewellery making, laminates, coatings, and decorating surfaces. Applicators are great for applying masking fluid to paper, while our Art Spectrum Masking Fluid Applicator can help with blending colours.
Latex: We stock Art Spectrum Masking Fluid, Gedeo Latex, Winsor & Newton Art Masking Fluid, and Derwent Eraser Pens. Masking fluid is a rubber latex solution that can keep dry areas free of colour when applied over the top. When dry, it can be painted over. It can then be peeled or rubbed off with your fingers once the paint is dry. Gedeo Latex is perfect for moulding shapes, both simple and complex, small or large. It is particularly good for masks. Either dip an item in latex or brush latex over an item to make a mould.
Alginate: Alginate is best suited to life casting and drawing. It is often used in dental practices, such as to make moulds for mouth guards. In art, alginate can build on this to create detailed mouldings. It is particularly great for picking up very fine detail when life casting—right down to fingerprints and other subtle skin details.
